Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez has fought a lot over the past couple of years, it’s just that he’s starting to get lined up against the same guys over and over. Rematches with Dream champion Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri have been discussed and he’s already rematched both Josh Thomson and Mitsuhiro Ishida.
There’s still Bellator champion and fellow Top 10 fighter Eddie Alvarez out there if Bellator and Strikeforce can come together on terms to make that fight happen, but many top lightweights are locked up in UFC contracts.
Melendez’s good friend and training partner, Jake Shields, recently relinquished his Strikeforce middleweight title to make the jump to the UFC. That move obviously hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Strikeforce champ.
