Gilbert Melendez Re-signs with UFC, Will Coach TUF 20 Opposite Anthony Pettis

Posted on by Erik Fontanez

Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal at StrikeforceGilbert Melendez has agreed to re-sign with the UFC and will coach the 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, the organization announced late Sunday evening.

Melendez and Pettis will then fight for the UFC 155-pound title later on in the year, according to a company statement. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

TUF 20, will begin filming in May and premiere on FOX Sports 1 on Sept. 10. The season will feature fighters from the UFC’s new female strawweight division. The season winner will be crowned as the inaugural UFC 115-pound champion.

Carla Esparza, who comes into TUF 20 as the Invicta FC strawweight champion, said in December that she would like to see Melendez coach the upcoming season. Little did she know she would get her wish before Sunday’s announcement.

“I like Gilbert Melendez,” she told MMAWeekly.com last year, when asked who she would like to be coached by on the upcoming reality show. “I think he would be a good coach. I love watching him fight and I like his style.”

Melendez and the UFC hit a rough patch in contract negotiations recently, which prompted UFC President Dana White to say that the fighter should go seek offers elsewhere.

Subsequent to White’s comments, Bellator MMA and Melendez agreed on a structure to a deal, but the UFC had a offer-matching period to which they were entitled. The offer was matched prior to Sunday’s announcement.

A date and venue for the Pettis-Melendez title fight were not announced.

Dana would have looked like an idiot had he let him go to Bellator

    • Alex

      LOL why?
Who cares about overrated guy who won only first round against a boring champ and lost a round to freaking Diego Sanchez?
Should’ve lost to Josh Thomson too.
      And ducked Khabib.

      He’s expendable.

      • kjkjkjkk

Alex you are expendable.. no one in life will care about you or your opinion! Glad to see melendez fighting again. I would rather see aldo vs pettis but oh well…

        • Alex

Talk smack all you want loser – you know that I tell the truth and it hurts you and your butthole.

Pettis vs Aldo would be better, Pettis vs Khabib/RDA winner would be better, Pettis vs Grant would be better – everything would be better.

Melendez has crapped his pants when UFC matched him against Khabib, so he backed out like a bitch. Now he prefers to get his ass beat in a title fight which he didn’t deserve.

          • Chicago

Why is another man’s butt on your mind?

          • Alex

LOL was it the best you could come up with? Like you don’t know what butthurt means (hint: you belong to that group as well).

You also know that I’m right, and have nothing to say against any of my claims LOL

          • XIRand0mHeroIX

Right or not it’s the obnoxious way you go about it that get you into these back and forth arguments. When you post in an article you have a way of coming off as a snarky know it all douche and it makes people who may even agree with what you are saying go on the defensive

          • TheCerealKiller

            Yeah!

          • Alex

LOL so they will go defensive because I don’t talk pretty to them, boo hoo cry me a river LOL

Truth hurts and I don’t care what you or others feel in your little hearts.
You agree with me, and that’s what matters.

          • earlsimmons

LUL listen to this liberal handing down life lessons. Grow up.

          • MuayThaiFood

I agree with Randomhero, you’re a total douche nozzle Alex.

  • ultimatefatcunt

This is what happens when competition exists. It allows fighters to negotiate a contract best suited for them. Clearly, ultimatefatcunt didn’t want to lose face against bellyfat mma, so they had to match the offer. Once that was done, Gil had to abide cos that was the terms. Great to now know competition exists not only on its own country but also abroad. U run the risk that once a good fighter leaves, they may create better prospect for your competitor and that u in turn may lose some credibility. Competition is good for everyone.

    • gnodeb

Except for fighters on real title runs who are overlooked again and again by fake drama in media.

We are talking about UFC title. I don’t care what is he capable of. What are his accomplishments since now? Decision lost to Ben and decision win against Diego. Are we sure there is nobody with some better credentials?

      • Alex

        Exactly.
All this competition BS makes the fighters overrated and overpaid, just like it happened to Gil.

One org = the best fight the best = no jumping ship crap.

  • Alex

LOLOL waste of money. Should’ve sent him to Rebnitor.
Melendez got outstruck by Benson in rounds 2, 3, 4, 5.
Pettis will tear him a new one.

While on TUF he should take striking lessons from JoJo Calderwood.
Maybe she will help him survive more than one round against Showtime.

  • Shakir Hanifa

waste of money! should v let him go to Bellator! Many fighters in UFC light weight will destroy him eventually.

    • Alex

      Totally.
Khabib would’ve pounded his ass, just like Thomson did in their BS decision rubber match. Melendez knew that and ducked him.
RDA would’ve beat him up on the feet.

Damn, Edgar should’ve jump back to LW, he would’ve knocked Gil out. Pity that they’re buddies or whatever,

      • Shakir Hanifa

The whole Cesar Gracie camp is just winy little weaners. They always create drama and bargain for something they dont deserve. I do like the style of Diaz brothers fight, but again they are not consistent or top contenders, yet they want title shot right away. Its a bloody Joke. How about TJ Grant? i think he can finish Gilbert in the first round.

        • Alex

          Yeah, him too…
TJ would be too big and strong for Melendez, eventually he will turn his lights out.

        • gnodeb

I’m repeating myself. Nate may be annoying but he fights on regular basis, has nice record and didn’t get anything for free. I agree about rest of the camp. It’s crazy how many title shots they got…

          • Alex

            LOL no.
Nate got a gift from the UFC – they decided to give him guys with bad MMA wrestling, so he would have the title shot once in his life. Then Benson easily laid on him, just like Guida and Joe Daddy.

Was waste of a shot imo, should’ve made other matchups and a title fight could’ve been less predictable.

          • gnodeb

Fair enough, but at least he has 3 wins in a row and two of them were against Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller. He spend a lot of time in UFC, got a lot of bonuses in the process. In last fight, he TKOed Gray Maynard, who may be past his prime, but still was expected to win by wrestling. I truly don’t expect Nick Diaz to accept that kind of opponent for anything but title fight. Nate did, so I think he deserves some props for it…

          • Alex

At least that – I agree.
As of Maynard fight, I didn’t expect him to wrestle Diaz, he’s afraid of his guard since TUF.
In their second fight, Maynard didn’t try to take him down even once, just stood with him for 15 minutes and got that BS decision win.

          • Shakir Hanifa

Nate won what 1 of his last 3 or 4 fights?

And he started talking shit to Pettis right after
Thompson Henderson fight? I was so annoyed and it was rediculus to say what he
said on his twitter. He got his ass whooped by both Bendo and Thompson and what
right he has to say anything?

I really don’t think with these new talents he can hang
in UFC for a while. I would give 2 more years. Dana will get tired of it when
            he lose 3 more fights.

        • Larry Bustillos

why don’t you come down to the camp , then will see who a WEANER , P ……

  • David

What happened to Aldo vs Pettis? That would be a way better fight. Gil does deserve this fight though. I think Pettis will win with a 2nd rd KO

    • uncle

How by beating Diego when some1 like Michael Johnson is beating tougher guys and being put
      on a back burner

      • shakejunt

michael johnson has also lost to other guys in the fringe 15

        • uncle

The same guys who beat Johnson would beat Melendez
          i’m not sold

          • fsunoles10

pretty useless comment bud, you’re essentially doing mma math with your logic which we all know doesnt work.

          • uncle

I’m not using MMA math I
just don’t think Gil is all that good

          • shakejunt

you either think very highly of myles jury and reza medadi or that the ufc’s lw division isn’t all that good

  • Robert Miller

Yea, What happen to the Aldo vs Pettis super fight ?

    • uncle

What happened to Grant vs Pettis

      • shakejunt

        injuries on both match ups

        • uncle

I know just thought about time
          Pettis heals Grant should be
          ready to go

    • Kris-tyahn

Aldo doesn’t want to move up and wanted to fight at catch weight “supposedly.” Aldo, like Silva loves to fight “bums” and doesn’t want to move up and challenge himself, and doesn’t want to give up size and strength by moving up in weight! Why else would Aldo not move up?! He doesn’t want to fight Cub or Mendes, yet their the top two who’s next for a title shot, so I guess he’ll fight one of the two. How exciting… Wink wink!!!

  • g-wilacuz

I love the ufc. gilbert Melendez 1-1 gets a titleshot. brock lesnar 1-1 gets a title shot, Daniel cormier beats two shitty heavy weights and 1 nobody at lhw and is in the talks for a title shot. then u got some fighters who will string together 4 or 5 victorys and then 1 loss will set them back to the end of the line. its not about talent anymore, its a popularity contest.

    • Alex

Well Gil and Black Teletubby sure don’t deserve any shots, but what about Brock? There was no one else in line – Nog and Mir were coaching TUF already, couldn’t compete for that.

BTW Couture was -140 in this fight and Brock was even. Hadn’t he deserved the fight, he should have been a huge underdog LOL

      • g-wilacuz

cain velasquez, shane carwin, hell even cheick kongo just to name a few. at least they had some notable wins at the time

        • Alex

          LOL they didn’t.
Cain and Carwin went 2-0 in the UFC against some cans, and Kongo just got back from the Herring loss – same Herring that Brock whooped.

          Learn your MMA.

          • g-wilacuz

brock lost to frank mir, someone who was in a must win situation, and then beats heath hearing. I suppose those guys are not cans. real top competition their

          • Alex

            Who are you talking about?
Cain Velasquez beat some can Brad Morris, and Carwin beat Neil Wain and some Hungarian dude. They didn’t beat any one who could give them a title shot.

You probably haven’t watched MMA back then, you would know that no one was even close to consider Carwin/Cain a title contenders back then.

Brock was the only one available, everyone accepted this fight, no one whined, and even journalists thought that Brock would win – and guess what happened LOL

          • g-wilacuz

I see your point. but cant u agree that now with all the divisions stacked that the real talent gets passed over, and fighters that are undeserving are getting title shots.

          • Alex

Yeah, well, Melendez doesn’t deserve it that’s for sure.

If they give the old fatso Cormier a title shot that’ll be BS, too.

          • g-wilacuz

I agree, but you know they will

    • Seth

How that could be popularity contest with Gil? People were actually happy for him leaving UFC. It’s not hate thou, but we all know he won’t beat Pettis. He would get easy run in Viacom when Eddie’s gone and secure some money for his future there, with Viacom claiming they have best LW ever. So don’t see how this one is popularity contest.

      • g-wilacuz

how is it not. gil didn’t deserve a shot. nurmagomedov is a much more worthy opponent.

        • Seth

Yeah, but its not like fans were rioting to get Gil a title fight. People actually wanted to see him LEAVE the UFC and go to Viacom MMA, so he can be champion there. He won’t beat Pettis and in Viacom he could earn some easy money to secure his future. Popularity contest was when Sonnen got a title shot at 205 or when Diaz got his after losing a fight. Here? Nah, it wasn’t popularity contest IMO.

          • g-wilacuz

            good point

  • uncle

Pretty Tony is going to knock Melendez out

  • guest

TJ Grant is a nobody…casual UFC fans don’t know who he is or care to see him fight, and guess what…we’re the ones that keep the UFC alive and up and running cause we’re the ones with the cash as opposed to you “hardcore” MMA fans who barely have enough money to buy yourselves a cheap gi. Dana will keep rewarding the popular fighters cause they keep us interested.

    • TheCerealKiller

Yes, McDonalds employees are the pinnacle of hardcore MMA fans. You are a genius.

Maybe the most ignorant post so far this year.

    • hardcoremmafan87

if you think that the casual fans are the ones buying all the fights you are smoking pole. casual fans dont buy all the fights. casual fans sit there and boo at every grapple and ground oriented match, while us hardcore fans are talking about what the guy needs to do to reverse out and take the better position. Just go sit down kid

  • diazfan209

It wouldn’t have made any sense for the UFC to let one of their most skillful and exciting fighters go.

    • shakejunt

      no bias here…

      • diazfan209

am I a journalist? no, I’m a fan w/ an opinion, just like you.

        • shakejunt

it’s just the name yo. your post could have been blank and we’d have known your stance.

  • Shred Man

This is a bunch of BS. Melendez, who is 1-1 in the UFC, does not deserve another title shot. Especially when they were talking about Aldo vs Pettis after UFC 169. They should have made them both coaches of TUF then had the super fight. Melendez is nothing but a mediocre boxer who rarely throws kicks or grapples. He is a boring fighter from the crybaby camp. The UFC should have let Belatore have him.

    • uncle

I agree 1 million % at least Grant vs Melendez
      for the title shot

    • Baller31

Agreed. Aldo vs pettis a much more exciting matchup

  • Mark McDowall

Lost a fight and decisioned a guy not even in top 30 at LW….that’s title material if I’ve ever seen it! This is purely a f you to Bellator. A week ago Dana was willing to let him go…he saw Born get all excited and he pulled the rug out from under him!

    • fsunoles10

he arguably won the benson fight and beat one of the most durable fighters in mma in an action packed brawl pretty much. how the hell can you criticize somebody and talk down on the guy like he is a scrub? you’re either a speaking out of dislike for melendez or you’re simply stating an uneducated opinion cuz gil is widely regarded as a top lw no matter who you talk to.

      • Kris-tyahn

He did good vs. Benson but he didnt do enough towin the belt, it was pretty 50/50, but he didnt do enough to be champ, just like Gustaffson vs Jones. But I still don’t think Gil deserved a title fight after he went to a decision vs. a non ranked fighter. Yes he’s durable an the fight was incredible, but worth a title fight?! I’m not convinced, but he is definitely a top 5 or even top 3 LW in the world. But I guess there’s no one else to challenge Pettis, bc Bendo barely beat Thompson and TJ is still nowhere to be seen. Seems like the LW division isn’t as good as it was, bc when you look at the top 10, there are no guys who are on any type of winning streak. Melendez and Bendo have won 1 while Thompson lost one, TJ is brain damaged, Diaz beat an overrated Gray Maynard & got destroyed his two previous fights before the Mysnard beat down and Khabib hasn’t fought any top 10 fighters yet! So maybe Gil should get the next title shot… OUCH! Ouch bc some fighters had to win 4 or 5 fights To get a title fight.

      • Mark McDowall

You can argue whatever you want…the FACT is that he lost. I agree it was a razor thin decision but either way it was a loss.

But putting on an exciting fight against a fighter who would be lucky to be ranked in the top 50 at LW. Again I agree that it was an exciting fight…they knocked the hell out of each other. But it was a decision win over a non ranked fighter…I don’t see how that puts him in line for a title fight.

As far as being one of the best LW’s in the world. I will whole heartedly disagree with you on that. Look at his record…he has fought 1…let me spell that out for you O N E ranked opponent in his career. Thompson is ranked now but wasn’t when they fought. How can you say that someone who hasn’t fought the best…is one of the best? It just doesn’t add up!

  • sevendays7

Melendez is a beast. He should be the champ already, unfortunately MMA is plagued with terrible judging. Good for Gil I’m sure he’ll make an excellent coach and an excellent UFC Champ.
