Gilbert Melendez - Strikeforce Barnett vs CormierStrikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez and challenger Josh Thomson have been friends. They share a mutual respect for one another. And Melendez it looking at getting a second victory over Thomson so that they can stop keeping a professional distance from each other and possibly ramp their friendship back up.

But first, he’s “gotta try and kill” Thomson, keeping the Strikeforce strap firmly around his waist. The two square off at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier on Saturday night in San Jose, Calif.

If he does get the better of Thomson again, what’s next for Melendez? Are there more Strikeforce talents on the horizon? Is becoming the latest fighter to jump ship to the UFC a possibility?

Check out’s one-on-one exclusive interview with Gilbert Melendez and find out…

A lot of hype surrounding this guy. I think he is a mid level UFC fighter at best.

your just a ufc fan boy, it wouldn’t be the first time a ufc fighter loses to a strikeforce, bellator or dream fighter

    • KBEsq

Don’t worry, Rube, I think therealmo is Melendez in disguise. The name kind of matches up. It’s not the first time he has absolutely nothing substantive to say to someone who makes a valid point (other than insults of course).

As soon as he sees my comment, he’ll post something about me personally, but nothing to back up Melendez being ranked so highly.

  • Gilbert Melendez – Hmmmm! – How anyone thinks he would stand a chance against Edson Barbosa of Brazil is beyond comprehension – Its difficult to see anyone in the division beating him after what he did to Terry Etim w/ that Bruce Lee style spinning roundhouse back kick

I think Gilbert tried to stand w/ him it would end badly for him – Superior in every way …

Comical, Nate Diaz considers Melendez (his training partner) the #1 Lightweight in the world, and Diaz is in line for a UFC title fight. Sorry Glenn & Rube, but I think Nate has a little more insight than both of you combined. I think Melendez is rightfully #3 amongst lightweights. Hopefully this will be his last fight in Strikeforce, unless the UFC sends him Maynard, Guida, or Pettis.

    • KBEsq

Totally agree. Respectfully, I don’t think any weight should be placed into training partners/friends’ positive comments about each other. It really means nothing.

Let’s get Melendez in the UFC, then see what happens. I’m not even saying he won’t be great. I’m just saying lets put him up against the top competition before we rate him there.

Please. Barbosa got beat by Pearson and won. Masvidal would beat Barbosa
