While the MMA world is abuzz talking about UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s return from an ACL injury that knocked him out of this weekend’s UFC 143 main event, the champ says his progress is ahead of schedule, but that he’s still paying close attention to his rehabilitation so he’s not having to start over at square one.

The doctor’s are indicating the July is a likely target for GSP to return to full-on training, but those who are hoping for a late summer showdown between the champ and the winner of Saturday’s fight between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit may want to temper their expectations.

While St-Pierre is more than on track, he says he won’t be ready for a fight this summer.

Check out the video below to hear more from St-Pierre on his injury, his rehab, and when he plans to step back in the Octagon to unify his belt with whomever is crowned the interim UFC welterweight champion this weekend in Las Vegas…

    Title fight on Saturday, regardless of who wins. Would the UFC make the champ wait until October/November to fight GSP. One would think the winner would have to defend his title in June.

      You are 100% right, sir. They will need to defend the interim title @ least once!

  • Triggerman99

    I’m sure they’re gonna wait. The whole purpose of an Interim Title is to unify it with the actual Title, so it wouldn’t really make any sense to have another fight.

    • MrAdidas

      Actually no, the point to having an interim is to keep the division interesting. Diaz or Condit will have to defend their title @ least once b4 they fight GSP! If Condit or Diaz losses their title defence, then the “real” #1 contender will fight GSP come November!

        I disagree. Dana will likely make them wait and fight GSP because that is the most interesting fight. No other fight makes sense at this time. But you’re right; I should still rephrase my initial statement;
        The ultimate goal of creating an Interim Title is to unify it with the actual Title.

        Diaz’s camp has stated that they would wait for GSP. Of course if joe silva tells them they have to fight, they have to fight. Condit would probably be willing to defend the belt, the only problem is that currently there’s no clear contender. Everyone else is really a win or two away from proper title contention.

    Did he hurt himself making those Rush Fit DVDs? That sucks.

  • D-rail

    I wonder if he also hurt his acting career too.

    They wont defend until Georges. There is no other fights that make sense. He has dominated everyone already. I hope Condit tears Diaz apart!
