For Blair Butler of G4 Television’s “Attack of the Show,” the opportunity to cover MMA alongside her longtime love of comics was like a dream come true.
Co-hosting the MMA “Chokehold” segment with Blair Herter (also of G4’s X-Play series), Butler has been able to cover a myriad of events ranging from the UFC to Strikeforce. And in the process she’s been able to see the women’s divisions flourish as well.
Recently Butler spoke to MMAWeekly.com about the current state of women’s MMA, including the upcoming Bellator women’s 155-pound tournament semi-finals taking place on Sept. 30, and the pending clash between 135-pound champion Sarah Kaufman and Marloes Coenen on Oct. 9 at Strikeforce.
“I think it’s great to see 115 (pounds featured); it’s a really exciting high-energy weight class,” said Butler of Bellator’s current women’s tournament. “I think it has shown the depth of that weight class, and I think it’s great to see the international fighters getting exposure here as well.
“I think it’s fantastic that American MMA audiences were introduced to how good Megumi Fujii really is. Also I’ve been super impressed with Jessica Aguilar; and Zoila Frausto’s knockout (of Rosi Sexton) to get into the tournament was incredible. It’s just got some really dynamic fighters.”
With the recent announcement of pairings for Sept. 30’s semi-finals announced as Fujii takes on Lisa Ward and Aguilar matches up with Frausto, Butler gave her impressions of the fights.
“I think the Megumi vs. Lisa fight will be really technical and I’m really curious to see if it becomes more of a stand-up fight since they are both really skilled on the ground; Megumi with her submissions and Lisa with her wrestling,” stated Butler.
“I actually think that Zoila and Jessica is going to be the really interesting one. Jessica looked really impressive in her semi-final match. I think it’s going to be a very exciting grappler versus strand-up classic fight.”
Turning her attention towards Strikeforce’s 135-pound women’s title bout between Sarah Kaufman and Marloes Coenen, Butler sees a close match-up that could go either way.
“I think it will be a really interesting fight,” commented Butler. “When Kaufman was fighting Miesha Tate she showed a real ability to scramble on the ground and sprawl. She had a tough second round in that fight, but she stayed on her feet and got out of a lot of submission attempts.
“Even though Marloes had problems against Cris Cyborg – who wouldn’t – she had some pretty great shots. She hit Cyborg with a right that was pretty dynamic, but it being Cyborg, she shrugged it off, but it will great to see Marloes bring that to a fight with Kaufman. I think it’s going to be a really great, dynamic exciting fight.”
As for if it is possible the MMA Chokehold segment Butler co-hosts with Blair Herter, could become a full blown show either on G4 TV or on the channel’s website, never say never.
“I don’t know,” stated Butler. “Right now it’s got a home on Attack of the Show and hopefully we’ll see what the future holds. Herter and I are just so enthusiastic to talk about a sport we really love and are passionate about it on Attack of the Show.”
Fans wanting more of Butler’s insight can check out Attack of the Show airing at 7PM Eastern, Monday through Friday on G4. There they can find both the MMA Chokehold segment as well as Blair’s weekly Fresh Ink comic book segment; which can also be found online at www.G4TV.com/FreshInk.
