A featherweight bout between Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson will headline UFC Fight Night Austin this fall, according to a report on Wednesday evening.

“UFC Tonight” reported during their broadcast that the 145-pound bout will be the featured fight on the Nov. 22 card at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.

Edgar (17-4-1), a former UFC lightweight champion, is on a mission to get back to featherweight-title contention and a shot at the the title currently held by Jose Aldo. In his last outing, Edgar dispatched former two-division UFC champion B.J. Penn with a third-round technical knockout last July.

He entered the division after a drop from lightweight and got an immediate title shot against Aldo, but Edgar came up short against Aldo at UFC 156.

Swanson (21-5) hasn’t tasted defeat since 2011 and is currently on a six-fight win streak. Four out of Swanson’s last six wins have come by either knockout or TKO. In his most recent fight, Swanson dominated Jeremy Stephens for 25 minutes in the main event at a UFC Fight Night card last June.

Also revealed for the UFC Fight Night card was a co-main event between Bobby Green (23-5) and Edson Barboza (14-2). Both fighters come into the Austin card off wins, with Green winning eight in a row and keeping a perfect record inside the Octagon.

Other fights for the card include Joseph Benavidez (20-4) vs. Dustin Ortiz (14-3) and Matt Wiman (15-7) vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg (14-5-1).

An alternative could’ve been Edgar vs. Mendes with the winner to fight Aldo vs Swanson winner. Just saying 🙂

Woooow! Two amazing match ups! So excited for this event already.
The stakes are sooo high for Edgar and Swanson, winner can easily fight for the tittle next. As for Green and Barboza, daaamn. Two of the fastest an most explosive stand up fighters in the division, it cant get any better. Im hoping Edson takes this, and extend his winning streak a bit.

This makes sense only when you consider Cubs last shot at Aldo, but that was like a lifetime ago. I think Cub should be fighting for the belt now and Edgar face someone else coming off his uninspired drubbing of poor ol BJ

I remember a time I had never seen Cub win in the WEC, or at least it seemed that way. Then he debuted against Ricardo Lamas. Yet here he is amounting his own little Hunt-esque comeback riding a 6 fight win streak with some bonuses here and there to boot.

I think Cub has a real good shot of upsetting Edgar, who will undoubtedly be the Favorite.

As far as the card as a whole, so far it seems pretty solid. Glad to see UFC fight cards worth having cable for again.

I think Cub needs to beat someone at the top of the division to get his shot at the title and Edgar is the guy.

i think it’s the other way around. edgar needs to fight someone relevant in the division before getting handed another title shot.

probably should’ve been aldo-swanson 2 and edgar-mendes to see who deserves a rematch.

The problem is Frankie is a ‘yes’ man. when he said yes to do the Ultimate Fighter and fight BJ again, he wasted more time on fighting in his own division, therefore, it makes it easier for people to say he needs to fight someone relevant. My opinion though is, this fight maybe FOTY and if thats the case, even if its a unanimous decision and swanson loses, they should give him his title shot, its only fair…….. Really think about it though guys, if McGregor wins on Friday do you really think they wont give him the title fight next with all the viewers he pulls in?! As long as he keeps winning the UFC will give McGregor a shot before they give it to Swanson, as unfair as that seems thats the way they work.
