Frankie-Edgar-UFC-144-pre-press-1Former UFC champion Frankie Edgar will do something he hasn’t done in years when he faces Charles Oliveira in a featherweight match-up at UFC 162 on July 6 in Las Vegas.  He’ll compete in a non-title fight for the first time since 2009, and hopes a win over Oliveira will move him closer to another championship bout.

“One step closer toward a title shot,” said Edgar when asked what a win over Oliveira would mean.

Oliveira (16-3, 1 No Contest) is 2-1 as a featherweight and nine of his 16 wins have come by submission.

“I think he’s a dangerous fighter, long and rangy with slick submissions,” Edgar said about his opponent in a chat on  “I guess his slick submission game might be the biggest threat.”

Edgar made his featherweight debut at UFC 156 on Feb. 2, losing to champion Jose Aldo by decision.  His speed and footwork was an advantage for him in the lightweight division, and he doesn’t believe anyone at 145 pounds is going to have a speed advantage over him.

“I don’t know if I have an advantage, they’re all lighter fighters, but I don’t think I’m outclassed in speed by anyone though,” he said.

To Edgar, everyone he faces is dangerous, including Oliveira.

“I’m nervous for everybody. Everybody possesses something to be weary of,” said the former champion.

UFC 162 takes place on July 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and his headlined by the middleweight title bout between champion Anderson Silva and top contender Chris Weidman.

Cub Swanson just beat Oliveira. How is this fight about Cubs fight on the card? Why isn’t Cub fighting Frank? Oliveira is 2-3-1 in his last six and he’s part of the “co-main event?” This card stinks. The FX card is better than the PPV.

    • Ian Price

Agreed. It’s probably more of a feeder thing than anything. The UFC makes a lot of money when Frankie fights, but they don’t want to risk Frankie losing to Cub before another Frankie title fight, which would of course be the main event in any UFC PPV. Frankie’s a good PPV draw.

      • Served

Frankie is not a big draw. That’s why he didn’t get an immediate rematch w/ Aldo.

    • shakejunt

oh really? leben vs andrew craig is better than silva-weidman and siver-swanson? you’re a clownshoe

      • Cereal Killer

Since I’m not buying ANY of the Whyman hype, the Silva fight is a waste. Frank should smash Oliveira, another wasted fight. Sorry, but I don’t see the $55 value. Free show is therefore better.

        • modern day

always a free show on the internet

anybody discounting Oliveira is a fool. If you’ve actually watched his fights, he’s sickly talented. His transitions and technique are super smooth.

he has been a lil inconsistent of late. but on his best day, he can beat anyone in this division.

        • Baller31

Yeah, right, it’s the best card they have put on this year. If you wont buy this one, you should just stop watching UFC

He is fighting Oliveira cuz UFC needs him to get a win.

    • Oliveira has had some tough fights and has fought at LW against Cowboy and Jim Miller. He’s 2-1 so far at FW so I guess their giving him a chance to prove he can hang in there with the best. I believe they picked Oliveira due to his style and Cub Swanson against Siver b/c of their styles, that can be a good stand up war. That’s a good fight for Cub considering this is the first time he’s been on a roll in his career since his first 11 fights.

A win better not give him another title shot. I like Frankie, but Oliveira isn’t number one contender material, he needs to win at least one more. And I am just tired of seeing him in title fights, let him fight different people.

    • shakejunt

i think he’s just saying that it’ll get him back in the win column and that’s one step back to the title. he knows he needs a few wins, but his name and history alone will net him big opportunity fights.

  • Ian Price

How can he not? This is Frankie’s first non-title fight since…2009!! And it’s not like he was destroyed in any fight. He has either won the title fights (Bully, BJ Penn x 2), tied (Bully), or lost 2 rounds to 3 (Bendo x 2, Aldo). He is absolutely nowhere near gatekeeper status.

Nobody at his weight class in his right mind would have fought Aldo. Remember KZ wouldn’t fight Aldo last year. “Needed more time”. This guy out of Tom’s River comes right in and is STILL smaller than Aldo and the #7 P4P fighter almost takes it from the #4 P4P fighter (Aldo). So close. I was there at the fight and was about 70% sure Frankie had won, till Bruce read the decision.

    • Cptmats

I had Aldo Edgar a draw at least !

    • Baller31

I agree, it was a very good fight, and no one has ever beat edgar up, he’s only been decisioned. I would like to see him again vs Aldo after a couple fights.

  • Nobody has completely destroyed Frankie but the same goes for him. He’s finished 3 out of 9 fights that he’s won and he’s now on a 3 fight losing streak. This guy has heart but that’s not enough. He really needs to finish this guy. I have a feeling he’s going to get the Uriah Faber treatment and get thrown title shot after title shot. I wouldn’t mind seeing that fight at all at FW btw.

    • toom

Frankie has more then heart dude he’s good everywhere but I agree he should fight a couple more fights before a title shot

    • Cereal Killer

That’s a part of why I think his card stinks! Fitch got cut for having a better streak than Frank is on.

      • I was very upset to hear Fitch got cut. The guy was in the UFC for a long time and had two huge winning streaks. A loss to the number one contender, and that loss to Damien Maia (horrible fight) was not good enough reason to get cut. A lot of guys go through this part of their career especially being in the game so long. What card(s) are you excited for? Me personally, UFC Fox Sports 1 is incredible.

  • Asa

CUB should be getting fights to get closer to a title fight. And i had edgar winning the last 3 rnds and so did alot of ppl at the bar.

  • Mark McDowall

I think Edgar needs to actually finish a fight. He is going in to his 15th UFC fight with only 3 finishes. If he wins this fight in dramatic fashion then he is a heck of alot closer than if he wins on the cards. But still I don’t think Olivera is the opponent that gets him back in front of Aldo.
