A victorious Frank Mir at UFC 81

Frank Mir has worn the UFC heavyweight championship belt around his waist, only, at the time, he believes he was too young and things were too hectic for him to truly have a chance to reflect on what he had.

He’s fought for the belt, or at least an interim version of it, several times in his career, and he’s currently on the cusp of a title shot once again. All he has to do is get past Cain Velasquez at UFC 146 in May. That’s no small task, for sure, as Velasquez is the type of fighter that Mir has had trouble with in the past.

“Wrestling is one of the things I have the hardest time with,” said Mir on Tuesday, who had trouble against the likes of Shane Carwin and Brock Lesnar, both solid wrestlers. “So it’s always going to be an issue and it’s something for me to constantly work on and improve on in the gym.”

But that only takes Mir to where is currently is in his career, which is a point where he can sit back and enjoy the ride, including the challenge of such obstacles as Cain Velasquez.

Check out what else Frank Mir had to say at Tuesday’s UFC 146 press conference in Las Vegas…

  • lol I like his analysis of why the heavyweights are popular

Mir sucks! Giving him another title shot would be like calling Lesnar to give him another one too.

TKD…I disagree. Every time you think Mir is out of the picture … he’s right back in. I pick Cain to win, but the pressure Cain is going to feel will surpass that of Mir. Cain is where Mir was when Frank was in the title picture the first time … young and immature (for a fighter). I wouldn’t be at all surprised if some time later this year we see Mir TKO Dos Santos in a surprise upset KO compared to the likes of Gonzaga/CroCop … minus the leg kick!

The only way I see Mir winning this fight is by Choke. Mir’s standup is…..well nothing what people make it seem to be.
