Former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez was allegedly arrested on suspicion of DUI in Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

TMZ.com first reported the news.

Rodriguez was reportedly pulled over at 1:25 a.m. and later booked for misdemeanor DUI after failing a breathalyzer test.  Law enforcement told TMZ that Rodriguez voluntarily took the breathalyzer test.

He was released several hours later on $5,000 bail, and plans to fight the charges.

Rodriguez won the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 39 on Sept. 27, 2002, defeating Randy “The Natural” Couture.  He lost the belt in his first title defense in Feb. 2003 to Tim Sylvia at UFC 41.

He and the UFC parted ways following two more losses in late 2003.  His professional MMA record stands at 49-19.  He last fought in December, losing to Ante Delija in Croatia.  He has lost eight of his last ten fights.

Rodriguez is known outside of MMA circles for his appearance on the first season of the VH1 reality series “Celebrity Rehab.”

  1. Oh heavens.

  2. this poor guy’s got more problems than a harvard math book. hope he does NOT end up like dr. drew’s other patients… dead

    • Yeah, it’s crazy how Dr. Drew has killed some of his former patients. I hope Dr. Drew decides to have mercy on Ricco.

  4. Nobody is arrested for “suspicion” of anything. There is either probable cause for arrest or not. All media outlets get it wrong.

    • probable cause is a legal term, the plain language meaning of which is reasonable suspicion.

what do you expect from MMAWEEKLY?

    • Yeah, do you want MMA weekly to get sued for slander? They don’t know, so until they do know, they need to use words like, ‘suspicion’, or ‘alleged.’

  5. I’ve left my car and walked 3 hrs to get home before. You don’t wanna be “that guy” I’m sure it feels sucky

  6. Only if he took care of himself, there is a chance that he could have done something more in his fight career than losing to tomato cans in local circuits.

Ricco beat Arlovski and lost to Tim Sylvia, and was robbed of a win over Nog in PRIDE.

Ricco at his prime would have been game against even Fedor.

    • Agreed I used to train with Ricco before the UFC title and he was a beast the guy caught me in a helicopter arm bar it was the craziest move I ever had pulled on me. The guy was dripping with talent and he just got down about losing the title and let it ruin him. I feel for him. He is a great guy.
