Hot on the heels of the announcement that Urijah Faber and Frankie Edgar would face off in the main event of UFC Fight Night Manila comes confirmation of five more fights for the show, which is set for May 16 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The UFC’s first card in the Philippine will be shown live on Fox Sports 1 and is stacked with veterans from Asian promotions such as Ruff, Legend FC and PXC, including a couple of TUF: China alumni.
There are two match-ups that pit former PXC fighters against one another as South Korea’s Tae Hyun Bang (17-8) takes on Jon Guam’s Tuck (8-2) in lightweight action and Jon Delos Reyes (7-4), also from Guam, faces Filipino Roldan Sancha-an (4-1) at 125 pounds.
The remaining three match-ups all feature Chinese fighters with former Legend FC 170-pound champion Li Jingliang (9-3) going up against promotional newcomer Roger Zapata (4-1) and TUF: China winner Zhang Lipeng (9-8-1) taking on Canada’s Kajan Johnson (19-11-1).
Finally, Yao Zhikui (1-2), a TUF: China alum who was on the wrong end of a controversial split decision in his UFC debut, drops down to 125 pounds to take on Nolan Ticman (4-2). Each is looking for his first Octagon win.
Initially advertized as a Fight Pass event, UFC Fight Night Manila will now be shown on Fox Sports 1, meaning the eagerly anticipated match-up between Faber and Edgar will be live on TV in the U.S. The event will probably start in the morning local time, although there has been no confirmation of the start time as of the time of publication.
