They both want another shot at champion Georges St-Pierre and putting Jon Fitch against Thiago Alves in a rematch could be the quickest route back to a title shot for either fighter. The two top five welterweights are expected to square off at UFC 111 on March 27 in Newark, N.J.
The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Friday by sources close to the fight, who indicated the bout had not been inked, but was nearly a done deal.
Fitch (21-3) and Alves (16-6) first met in June 2006 with the American Kickboxing Academy fighter coming out on top by TKO in the second round. The Brazilian has been looking for revenge ever since.
Alves recovered and went on a tear in 2008. The American Top Team member won three fights against Top 10 talent, including victories over Matt Hughes and Fitch’s teammate, Josh Koscheck.
Originally slated to meet again at UFC 107 in December, Alves was forced out of the bout against Fitch with an injury and now the two will look to bring fireworks to the Jersey shores instead.
An already stacked card with two title fights, Fitch and Alves will compete on the same card where St-Pierre defends his title against current number one contender Dan Hardy. Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com for more information on UFC 111 as it becomes available.
