Filming of TUF Brazil 3 So Intense Some of Chael Sonnen’s Coaching Staff Fear for Their Safety

Chael Sonnen UFC 167 Post_9376It was said during The Ultimate Fighter 18, featuring UFC woman’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate as coaches, that it was one of the bitterest rivalries in mixed martial arts history. The book was closed on that rivalry when Rousey defeated Tate for a second time at UFC 168 on Dec. 28, but there may be an even bigger rivalry in the making in Brazil between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva.

The two are filming The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 as opposing coaches, and things have gotten so tense that some of Sonnen’s coaching staff fear for their safety.

“From what I have heard, the first day of filming was absolute insanity. Basically, it’s so crazy down there that the guys that are coaching on Chael’s team are scared to be there. That’s how insane it is inside that gym,” said UFC president Dana White following UFC Fight Night 35 on Fox Sports 1.

Prior to his UFC 167 bout with Rashad Evans, Sonnen spoke with in a video interview about the concerns of coaching in a country he’s offended on multiple occasions. Over the past three years, he’s insulted Brazil as a nation, their culture and their most revered fighters. On two separate occasions, a Brazilian fan has attempted to assault Sonnen in the U.S.

“The threats are very real, and we downplay them if anything. They’re real and genuine. Attempts have been made. It’s just the way it goes. I’m not going to live my life in fear. I don’t live in fear,” said Sonnen.“I don’t think about it a whole lot. Again, it’s a real thing. I recognize it. That’s it.”

The threats haven’t deterred Sonnen from antagonizing Brazil or Silva, and White thinks the season, which is expected to air in March, will be “crazy.”

“I think this season is going to be explosive and crazy,” added White. “From what I’m hearing, the things that went down, Wanderlei is 100-percent being Wanderlei and Chael is being Chael.”

its pathetic an athlete has to worry about his safety while he’s trying to coach. im sorry but Brazilian fans for the most part are p.o.s. that sit there and scream death threats and all this bs at foreign fighters but get butt hurt when somebody says something about them and want to talk about honor and respect and all this. sonnen is gonna mash wandy and its gonna be hilarious seeing how mad brazillians get when it happens.

    • Wolf Ticket

Does this really have anything to do with fans? All I read in that article was that it was crazy in the gym during the filming. I would not expect regular fans to be there at the time.

      • fsunoles10

why else would they fear for their safety copernicus? use your noggin bud

        • james j

You sound more like a Gator.

          • fsunoles10

i suffered thru the kentucky bowl games losses and all that so bro i will take your throat from your neck if you ever try me like that again. hah

          • Mma perry

Angry much? Try conversing without insulting or threatening people in the forum. It’s good on the stress level. Thought you might want to know. Cheers!

          • fsunoles10

i guess you cant sense a joke, and would i really type in a laugh at the end because im dead serious? lighten up kid.

    • me

well put….they are all nothing but inmates in the biggest lunatic asylum of them all, brasil.

      • A fan of honest fighters

I would say American takes the cake for what you speak of.

More religious nuts, more guns, more poverty, more theft, more corruption… hell more skewed opinion on the world and basic education.

I have been to both American, and Brazil, multiple times. You sir, have no idea how screwed up America is. Spend a night in the wrong part of detroit, no super market for miles, and gunshots throughout the evening.
Wake up, the only lunatic country leading the crazy is the one that can’t see itself in the mirror.

What both of you have said is not “well put” it is nonsense opinion of watching television.

        • Timothy Malone

Not sure what the point of this argument is but international studies show Brazil definitely has more poverty and corruption than the United States (Transparency International ranks US as 19th least corrupt, Brazil all the way down at 72). UN Office on Drugs and Crime also reports a murder rate in Brazil of 21 per 100,000 people; in the US its 4.

In summary, you have no idea what you are talking about and are just a typical clueless anti-American troll.

          • A fan of honest fighters

Travel around the states, honestly. Not to the places on the map that look fun, to the real places where the government has completely neglected the people for decades.

I can promise you, that Brazil is no different. Calling their fans p.o.s. in defense of a racist cheater and thief politician trying to gain fans by absurd remarks, is in fact typical clueless behavior. Yet, when it is pointed right back in the opposite direction. If you cannot see that I am simply through ignorance right back at ignorant people, there is no need to act so surprised by the remarks.

Both countries have good people, and both have ignorant morons like the original poster.

This is just an exercise in ignorance, never meant to be debated in the first place.

            Welcome back.

          • Mike mckinney

Just curious, if you believe you are informing ignorant people, why would you tell them to not act surprised?
Being surprised is the most rational response to “corrective information.”

Sorry, I just like screwing with people yammering on about people being ignorant, and making no sense in the process.

          • MuayThaiFood

In Flint Michigan in 2012 there were 64.9 murders per 100,000 so obviously it’s not all milk and honey in the USA and being ranked 19th in least corruption isn’t exactly something to brag about. We have our nose in everybody else’s affairs and are supposed to be a world leader and yet we are behind Barbados and tied with Uruguay. They guy you responded to actually made some valid points but unfortunately he used some generalizations also which weren’t entirely fair.

        • james werner

Brazil is a fkn zoo nice try Buddy.. Try telling the truth I’ve been to Brazil and they’re fkn animsls

          • james werner

Detroit is a fkn zoo nice try Buddy.. Try telling the truth I’ve been to detroit and they’re fkn animsls

          • MuayThaiFood

Many, many large cities around the world including in the US are dangerous at least in certain areas or during certain hours. You’re making a misleading generalization.

          • fsunoles10

he’s also picking the worse example he can think of but how many cities are like detroit in the u.s.? not many are that bad, maybe flint, oakland, st. louis or baltimore but i dont thinks it quite that close detroit is a complete hell hole.

    • A fan of honest fighters

So apparently being a racist athlete gives Chael a pass… because he is american ?

      Your logic is fully flawed.

Americans (frankly) are everything that is wrong with the world, especially the ones like Chael who lie, cheat, and steal to call themselves any different from another race.

You sir, are foolish to think Chael didn’t cross the line and regardless of the “fight” he deserves a punch in the face. In fact, I would love to see him banned from the sport. He promoted these hateful remarks, and deserves to be booted from the sport for it.
He wasn’t “hyping” the fight, he was being Chael Sonnen, A known liar, cheater, thief, and political airhead with the likes of every other preachy american whom lacks an education on their own reflection in the mirror. Everything that is wrong with the world starts with guys like him.

That said, the show must go on.

      • fsunoles10

where exactly did i make this an american vs brazillian thing? i said its unacceptable for an athlete to fear for his life because when coaching, reread your comment back to yourself and if you dont see how irrational your argument is id say your logic is the one that is flawed. the fact that you’re obviously anti american destroys your own creditability, also you make a lot of assumptions bud and thats never good for a supportive argument. you keep insulting american intelligence yet you make massive generalizations left and right now do you think that makes you sound more intelligent than the next guy? you think you have some moral high ground on americans because you have so misinformed delusional interpretation of what an american is? you sir are a moron.

        • fsunoles10

*fear for his life when coaching

        • A fan of honest fighters

you’re dreaming if you don’t see what you said about your generalizations of brazil, a country which helped build modern MMA. To think you use a term like “butt hurt” and call me a moron. I am just balancing your ignorance, with … yep.

          Moron is right.
Chael is not being attacked for being an athlete from America you tool, yet you blow up on brazil then get butt hurt when I drop some truth on you.

          Suck it up Sally.

          • fsunoles10

i said for the most part i didnt single every brazillian out but if you watch any event in brazil the majority of the stadium is chanting death threats and insults in unison how do you deny this reality? is it a generalization if its true and i can prove it? you contradict yourself so much its insane and you really have the nerve to insult somebodies intelligence? cmon kid use your noggin and butt hurt was the appropriate term cuz you’re acting like your butt hole was just penetrated. and brazil help building mma is no excuse for sonnens staff needing to fear for their safety nor is it an excuse for brazillians yelling death threats, you have no morale high ground here bud im sorry to break it to you. reread all your comments back to yourself and ask yourself who here really needs to lighten up? you’re crying about insults and defending death threats. hah

          • MuayThaiFood

When Brazilian fans yell Uh vai morrer! it’s not meant to be taken literally.

          • fsunoles10

it doesnt matter bro i personally dont care about it but im making a point to the anti american people here and showing them how big of hypocrites they are most of the time. they cry about americans chanting usa but its all good when others yell you will die at people and than they go on to attack americans and the u.s. as a whole cuz put simply they’re butt hurt by the reality presented to them. the u.s. and its citizens are an easy target now a days apparently but all this about americans being stupid and all this is insane, there is no country thats gonna get as successful as us and be stupid, that makes abolutely no sense and the fact that people are insulting american intelligence on an american made machine is hilariously ironic. but im with ya i know they dont mean it but stop with the hypocrisy.

        • MuayThaiFood

There’s no problem coaching in Brazil. It’s his personal insults of other fighters and their country. He made very disparaging remarks about Anderson Silva, insulted his friends, family and country. Does he deserve to die for it….no. Is he an ignorant, arrogant jackass for saying it…absolutely. He’s also a liar, a cheat and a convicted felon and that is not a point of view that’s been publicly documented. Whether or not Chael is racist or not probably only Chael knows for sure. Although, Brazil is a mixture of many races and while insulting Brazilians in general is not necessarily racist he made some comments that could be interpreted as such. Anderson Silva grew up poor and wealth in that country is heavily stratified by race. The darker your skin color the more likely you are to be on the bottom rung of the socio-economic ladder. So, when Chael made the comment about when he was a kid he and his friends were philosophizing….blah blah blah, while Anderson and his friends were playing in the mud I get a picture of Chael and his West Lynn middle class white friends and Anderson and his poor black friends ( odds are good he wasn’t buddies with middle class white kids). This and other statements he’s made could have a racist undertone. There are a fair number of criminals in Brazil and it can be a dangerous place if you are not careful but to say that all Brazilian fans are P.O.S. is a pretty ignorant thing to say. You realize don’t you, that, even if every fan that attended every live sporting event in Brazil was a criminal that would still be a small fraction of the population right? And of course that’s not the case. Chael could be being received like an honored guest but he chose this path to sell more tickets and promote himself. I’m not trying to justify criminal violence against him but if you go up to a hornet’s nest and poke it do you expect them not to try and sting you when they might do it just for passing too close?

      • shooter09876

People like you are what’s wrong with the world……angry little man

      • james j

        Good point

        • fsunoles10

explain what point he made exactly, his argument was insanely off base so i guess you just hate americans for some irrational reason as well.

      • Baller31

Americans are everything that’s wrong with the world? Obviously you haven’t travelled much, douchebag.
It takes an ignorant, uneducated hypocrite to make such an offensive statement.

        • A fan of honest fighters

I have been to 20+ countries, more than once for most. America is littered with scumbags, religious nuts, poverty, and corruption, equal to the worst parts of the world. They fuel wars, arrest and abuse the act of law, fill jails beyond capacity and privately fund more hidden political movements than any other country in the world.

I have many American friends, quite a few served their country, and they certainly aren’t the assholes at UFC events chanting “USA USA USA”.

I am simply balancing the american ignorance, one way, or another.

          • Fern

‘A fan of honest fighter’ don’t even try to ration with the Chael Sonnen fans. Just like their idol, they just ignore all reason and maturity, bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

          • Baller31

I’ve travelled all over the world for the majority of my life–Europe, central and South America, several countries in Asia, and I assure you that the crime and poverty in the United States pales in comparison to that in most other countries. Brazil is especially impoverished, and the murder rate makes Detroit seem like paradise. Many of the people there have given up hope and therefore their happiness comes from living vicariously through their celebrities and pro athletes. That is why they go to insane, fanatical extremes in supporting them. Your statements lead me to believe you’ve only seen Brazil on tv.

          • fsunoles10

hah the hypocrisy in you lot is hilarious, you whine about us chanting usa but dont care about death threats being yelled at people nor do you care when any other country is nationalistic. its so obvious you idiots are anti u.s. and all i see on this comment section from the anti u.s. people is subjective thinking meaning you’re speaking out of emotional essentially.

        • lowlb

Dude, you managed to say nothing, but you called someone a douche bag. Tell us about America and your travels, you delusional caveman.

          • Baller31

I said much, but maybe I used big words you couldn’t comprehend??

    • lowlb

Don’t be so naive dude, this is Hollywood. Chael called out a big name guy who he can out wrestle. Chael coaches for filming shoots and then leaves. The real coaches get to deal with this drama that Chael created and Dana loves it. The lamest thing is it isn’t even a good match-up between fighters – it’s just two drama queens.
Chael was smart to attack Wandy because it makes for good TV.
I much greater prefer the Canadian vs the Aussie because it’s all about MMA and the match-ups.

Chael is an actor and the UFC is entertainment.
I just hope Chael screws up and get’s his ass kicked.
Wandy is a legend who has fought for many years.
Chael is a loud-mouth whose success has been built on great wrestling and more importanlty, talking and TRT.

      • fsunoles10

dont be naive huh? you’re aware brazil is the place where a soccer ref was beheaded right there on the field right? how about that brazillian rapper that was shot to death while he was on stage at a show rapping? it doesnt matter where they are really but im sure dana has a great security detail for him but thats besides the point, the entire point made was its pathetic that a fighter and his staff even have to fear for their life coaching some young fighters.

  • King Of The Spread

Yea, I mean jawing is part of the business but you don’t threaten their safety.

I mean they put a Brazilian fighter in the hospital that one time. 10-12 guys jumped him for sticking up for a woman.

It should be filmed at an undisclosed location and no one leaves or comes the whole show.

  • Jacob K

ummmmm pistons pacers, sox Yankees, hockey in general anyone??? sports events boiling over happens. mma is somehow different just because the boiling over looks like the sport itself???

  • Intelect

man they better have mercenaries on 24/7 stand by cuz if something happens to cheal no more ufc in brazil i know he said some shxt hella racist towards brazil but hope he makes it why is it even in brazil do it in vegas smh

  • rampage

dude its flfreakin Brazil! chael knws how it is over there. the fans are crazy about their teams. the only advice is dont leave the house. there have been people whos talk a lot of shit but chael seems to make it almost personal. it crosses the line in my opinion.

    • earlsimmons

noone cares about your opinion bro

  • Riddler81

Chael just needs Crazy Horse to be his bodyguard.

  • Fightfankevin

And it won’t help much when Chael gives Wandy a beat down either.

    • Fern

When has Chael ever given anyone a true “beat down”??

However I do remember him being raped quite a few times

The GOAT Andy Silva will come to Sonnen’s rescue & save the day! A made for TV event!

  • WTF

Bitterest? Really? You guys write for a living! Most bitter!

  • TNT

Wolf ticket! This is 100% uncle Dana promoting and everyone is soaking it up. It doesn’t take 1/2 a brain to see that. If it was that dangerous it wouldn’t be happening in Brazil. It’s not like their filming in a favela

  • james j

    Dane always the promoter

    • Fern

I swear Dana reminds me of some of the dumb jocks at my highschool when he talks. And I only say jocks in the negative fashion, not the “really good athletes” version, lol.

  • Big Tuna

Humans can’t behave. The Olympics, crazy Brazilians, dumb ass kids shooting schools up…when will we learn?

  • Racin8de

Yeah and when sht does hit the fan, if one of the fighters or Chael were injured or killed. Dana would be the first one to to say he was against filming the show in Brazil. I remember not to long ago; reading about a Brazilian soccer match, the referee stabbed a soccer player then a fan from the crowd killed the referee, then chopped his body up and hung his head on a stake in the ground on the soccer field…FCK THAT..!!!!

    • Gui

It’s true, that actually happened, but it was in a amateur match, and it was in state of Maranhao (if im not mistaken). Sonnen is in São Paulo (biggest and richest city in country), probably in a big fancy hotel and rounded with security. I bet there is not one problem about security, even if he goes to the closest mall around he will not be even be recognized by most of the people, and even if he be, no one is stupid enough to try to hit a mma fighter in a public place and be prosecuted for it.

by what the article states looks like Sonnen staff is worried by their security in the filming itself.

    • fsunoles10

there is video of this dude rapping in brazil on stage in front of a bg ass crowd and somebody shoots him right there on stage. them brazillians are crazy.

  • Mike mckinney

When did Chael make racist comments?
He made fun of Brazil, and some fighters from Brazil, but I don’t recall anything racist.

Btw, to that one guy. “American” isn’t a race either.

  • Larry LaRose

The former mayor of Sao Paulo (SP) outlawed MMA events in SP. If there were a major injury or death while filming, (because of violence) neither the UFC nor any other MMA organization be welcome back for a very long time. It’s not just rabid fans. You have to realize that gun use is rampant along with abject poverty and drug use. You guys think Mexico is bad? It is, but the number of homicides in Brazil is over 50,000/yr.

Sonnen really would be irresponsible & reckless to push his personal attacks toward the patriotic Brazilian people and its cultures.

When Y2J threw the Brazilian flag on the canvas at a WWE event, he was arrested, then deported. He was also suspended by the WWE to save face.

  • Get2DaChoppa

Chael and his crew may get murdered but if this show is actually able to take place some of the verbal napalm Chael unloads will be legendary.

  • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

Chael is crazy for going to Brazil, no way is it safe for him there
