Following up on several earlier announcements, UFC officials on Wednesday added Diego Brandao vs. Daniel Pineda to the UFC on Fox Sports 1 #1: Shogun vs. Sonnen fight card in Boston.
Brandao (17-8) made his way to the Octagon via the fourteenth season of The Ultimate Fighter. He slipped up in his follow-up performance, losing to Darren Elkins at UFC 146, but recovered with back-to-back victories over Joey Gambino and Pablo Garza at UFC 153 and UFC on Fuel TV 9, respectively.
Pineda (18-9) enters this fight coming off of a victory over Justin Lawrence at the TUF 17 Finale. The win over Lawrence likely saved Pineda during a time when pink slips were being handed out left and right. He had just come off back-to-back losses to Mike Brown and Antonio Carvalho in his two prior bouts.
Brandao and Pineda will square off in a featherweight battle in support of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Chael Sonnen, the UFC on FS1 #1 main event on Aug. 17 in Boston. The event also serves as featured programming for the launch of Fox Sports 1, Fox’s new national sports network in the United States.
