Fabio MaldonadoBrazilian light heavyweight Fabio Maldonado will move up to the heavyweight division to face Stipe Miocic in the main event at The Ultimate Fighter Brazil Finale on May 31. Brazilian website Combate first reported the news on Tuesday. UFC officials later confirmed the match-up.

Miocic (11-1) was originally scheduled to face former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos on the Sao Paulo fight card. On May 5, dos Santos withdrew from the fight due to an injured hand.

Miocic made his UFC debut in October 2011, defeating Joey Beltran by unanimous decision. He won his next two fights by knockout. The 31-year-old lost for the first time in his career to Stefan Struve on Sept. 29, 2012. He rebounded with clear-cut wins over Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga.

Maldonado (21-6) is riding a three-fight winning streak. He debuted in the UFC in October 2010, knocking out James McSweeney at UFC 120. He lost his next three fights, but rebounded with back-to-back wins in 2013. The 34-year-old last fought March 23, defeating Gian Villante by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 38.

The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 Finale takes place on May 31 from the Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo Brazil. Maldonaldo vs. Miocic headlines the fight card.

Should be a an easy fight for Stipe, Maldonado is an undersized lhw, he should be fighting at mw, there are even some ww bigger than him..

I understand he is doing it to save the card, but really? A guy that SHOULD be cutting down and fighting at 185lbs is going to move up to HW? This is a lose/lose fight for the UFC. If he wins, you just derailed one of your young up and coming HW’s. If he loses, he’s he never should have been in there anyways.

i was really looking forward to that jds miocic fight, i think they could have found him a better opponent though. im pretty certain miocic walks away with the w in this one.

This guy sure likes to take a beating

Lammmmmeeee what a weak replacement not even in the same weight class come on ufc this is a heavy weight fight its not like these guys need time to cut weight on short notice

    • Dragon Kid

Anthony Johnson fought as a middleweight & welterweight previously and yet he beat Phil Davis convincingly!

johnson also fought at hw. hah its known how much weight he cut back than so kind of a mute point, the dude was a lhw cutting to ww. idk how he did it but damn.

  • snapdad

this is dumb. even a bottom of the barrel or unsigned heavyweight makes more sense than this.

    • Dragon Kid

He did fight as a heavyweight previously

i guess they needed a brazilian. at least stipe still gets to fight.
