As UFC Rio 2 (aka UFC 142) quickly approaches, several fighters had to drop off of the card this past week. Stanislov Nedkov, who was forced off the card due to visa issues, is the latest to be replaced.
UFC officials on Sunday announced that newcomer Caio Magalhaes would step in for him against fellow Brazilian Fabio Maldonado on Jan. 14 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.
Maldonado (18-4) had an 11-fight winning streak halted at the TUF 13 Finale in June, losing a unanimous decision to Kyle Kingsbury. The former undefeated professional boxer, between his two fighting careers, dwarfs the experience of his new opponent.
Magalhaes is undefeated in five professional bouts, but that doesn’t scratch the surface of Maldonado’s experience. Seven years the junior to Maldonado, Magalhaes will carry the strength of his team, Nova Uniao, with him into the Octagon.
A featherweight title showdown between current UFC champion Jose Aldo and challenger Chad Mendes headlines the UFC Rio 2 fight card.
