A bantamweight match-up has been added to the upcoming WEC 49 show in Edmonton, Alberta Canada as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace Wagnney Fabiano takes on Team Jackson fighter Frank Gomez in a bout on the debut card for the promotion north of the border.
The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com late on Tuesday evening by sources close to the fight.
Wagnney Fabiano looked to make waves when he signed with the WEC in 2008 after dominating the competition in the IFL before they went out of business. After a successful first two fights, Fabiano ran into rough waters in his third fight losing by submission to Mackens Samerzier.
Following the loss, Fabiano decided to drop to bantamweight after his teammate Jose Aldo secured the featherweight title, and he wanted to try his hand at 135lbs instead. It was a successful move in his first fight, and now Fabiano will try to match that in his next trip to the cage as well.
Frank Gomez steps in at WEC 49 on a two fight win streak in the promotion’s bantamweight divisions with wins over Noah Thomas and Seth Dikun. The New Mexico trained fighter has only one loss on his record, a 2009 submission to Scott Jorgensen, and he’s hoping to get closer to the top of the division when he faces Fabiano in Canada.
The bout between Fabiano and Gomez is slated to be a part of the untelevized undercard for the show at this point. The card will be headlined by former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner taking on Iranian wrestling stand-out Kamal Shalorus.
