EliteXC on Wednesday announced the official line-up for its first televised broadcast on CBS, set to take place on Saturday night, May 31, starting at 9 p.m. ET. The event will be the first live MMA event to ever be broadcast on network television.
“In terms of recognition and perception, I believe May 31 is the biggest and single most important MMA fight card ever. It will forever change the landscape of the sport and how it is perceived,” said Gary Shaw, Elite XC Live Events President.
The main event will feature YouTube sensation Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson against British heavy hitter James “Colossus” Thompson in a bout that should feature fireworks between two big punchers who obviously favor the stand-up.
The EliteXC middleweight title will be on the line as “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler makes his first title defense since winning the belt, as he takes on former Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting 185-pounder Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith.
Gina “Conviction” Carano will take a break from her duties as a cast member for the “American Gladiators” to face Minnesota Martial Arts Academy prodigy Kaitlin Young in the debut of women’s MMA on the big stage.
EliteXC announced Phil Baroni returning to action to face former middleweight champion Murilo “Ninja” Rua. Later in the day, however, the promotion switched gears and announced that Team Jackson fighter Joey Villasenor would replace Rua. No reason was given for the change in opponents.
A heavyweight bout between Brett Rogers and Jon Murphy finishes the televised portion of the card.
