Alvarez pressed the pace the entire fight. He secured several takedowns and stifled Pettis’ ability to implement his diverse striking by controlling the distance.
“I thought it was all Avarez,” said UFC commentator Jon Anik during the event’s post show.
“I didn’t see a split decision,” said Alvarez during the event’s post-fight press conference. “I’m the type of fighter that assumes that I lose every round. I need my coach to tell me how I did. But that fight, in particular, I went back after the third [round], and I assumed that I had won to fight. To see a split, that was a little shocking for me.”
A win is a win, though. Unanimous or split, Alvarez still won and moved into the top contender slot in the UFC’s lightweight division.
