Dream Fight Brought BJ Penn Out of Retirement

BJ Penn at UFC 107It will have been nearly a year when BJ Penn finally steps foot back in the Octagon at UFC 152 in September to face Rory MacDonald. That’s because Penn had called it quits after losing at the hands of Nick Diaz last October.

“This is probably the last time you’re ever going to see me in here. I want to perform at the top level. That’s it,” he declared after losing to Diaz. “I’ve got a daughter, another daughter on the way, I don’t want to go home looking like this. I’m done.”

But recently, a fight that Penn considers a dream fight, a fight that many other didn’t think would be all that enticing to the Hawaiian MMA legend, pulled him back into the Octagon.

In Rory MacDonald, Penn faces a stiff challenge from one of the hottest rising talents in the welterweight division, but more importantly to him, he faces a teammate of his arch-rival Georges St-Pierre.

Penn recently talked about his decision to return: why now and why MacDonald?

I guess losing to GSP makes fighting one of his over rated underlings a dream fight. Hope he is ready for september. I love BJ but he was looking like a happy buddha the last pic I saw of him. He looked like he could make 170 for him and for macdonald.

I could be wrong but I’d imagine it’s a dream fight for 4 reasons.

      1. He gets to shot to get back at St. Pierre’s camp.

      2. Rory has a TON of hype behind him right now as the future of the division.

      3. It’s a win win for BJ. If he loses, he’s “supposed to.” If he wins, “HE’S BACK!”

      4. One last big payday before his next daughter is born. I’m sure he has negotiated percentages of the PPV Buy.

This fight wouldn’t have the same following or hype behind it if it were Kos or Hendricks or anyone else in the division fighting Penn. Good for PPV Buys, the UFC and Penn’s wallet.

When McDonald was narrowing beaten by Condit and threw Diaz around for 3 rounds, he was just another guy but now that he beat Che Mills – there is a lot of hype around him. He’s looked at as the future of the WW now that he best Che Mills.

I can assure you that BJ isn’t thinking about any of the ridiculous things you wrote here. The money being the farthest from his mind.

Who is saying BJ is such an underdog? You? Who are you? Who will say that he’s back if he wins? You? Who are you? So BJ is in a win/win since nobody thinks he can win?

Please don’t write again. I am dumber for having read what you wrote.

        • rsnowbass

I never claimed to be anyone, other than a fan of the sport with an opinion, as do everyone else making posts on here.

I don’t have to help with you being dumb. You’ve proven that you’re dumb enough on your own. BTW – Money is never the farthest thing from a fighter of BJ Penn’s status mind Smart guy.

How in the hell is Rory overrated?? I guess dominating all your opponents including a Diaz makes you overrated. He did lose to Condit, but only after working him pretty good for a little while. And how long ago was that? How old was he when he fought Condit? Pretty sure he’s improved since then….

    • Triggerman99

Name a top guy he’s beaten, other than a LW Diaz.
Just because he’s overrated doesn’t mean he’s a scrub, it just means that his hype isn’t yet justified. And the amount of hype he’s getting isn’t justified when you look at who he’s beaten.

    • macgrubber

I like how you threw “including a diaz” in there like that means something.

      • Triggerman99

I threw it in there because the guy I was replying to mentioned him. Try to keep up, and maybe contribute to the conversation a little for once.

        • Triggerman99

Oh, you were talking to him. Eh, either way; try to contribute to the conversation for once.

Agreed! Rory is a beast and was whipping condit.and got robbed by early stoppage with.3 secs left! He deserved that 3 secs, he was covering he wasnt close.to kod. Bj is my fav so i hope he wins. I think bj standuo will be too much for.rory, rory standup is not that good at all. The fight.starts on the feet lol ask mir. Only gsp has taken down bj that many times and held him there in a fight. So rory better be the new gsp if he wants too win, cause he only has a shot if he can take bj down and hold him. I see bj winning by ko rnd 1

    • MrAdidas

It was 7 secs, but agreed Rory spanked Condit the 1st TWO rounds. I’d love to see Rory vs. Condit, but that wont happen anytime soon. As for Rory being overrated … WTF? Yeah that KID sucks, just turned 23 I believe. As for BJ, doesnt seem like hes dong much training, b/c he seems a lil on the hefty side. Also, how is beating Rory mean “he’s back?”. People say Rory is suppos eto win this fight, but if you ask me, isnt BJ “suppose” to win this fight?!? He’s a future Hall of Famer, multiple division Champ, yet BJ is the “under dog?” – ughhh I doubt it. Do I see Rory spanking BJ? ABSOLUTELY, but it’s b/c of who Rory trains with, GSP knows exactly how to beat BJ, Rory will have a gas tank for 10 Rounds & BJ, well BJ is BJ, Mr. NO CARDIO. BJ could KO Rory, b/c of the KO power BJ has, but thats a long way to go without getting cought with something nasty by Rory. If Rory gets BJ down, it’s going to be a rough night for BJ. I=f BJ thought GSP’s GnP was savage, wait until he tastes Rory’s elbows!

      • MaritalArtist

I don’t know who I want to win more. I guess BJ. Rory had plenty I’d time to bounce back. BJ is just too small against the top 5 welterweights.

      • MikeMc1983

Gsp can’t help rory by telling him how to win. They changed the rules since their last fight. Your no longer allowed to have your cornerman grease you up. 😉

        • stak

          you’re a comedic genius

          • Cptmats

Actually he’s just an idiot !

  • Booker T

    BJ is washed up.

    • Cptmats

Is that why he gave Diaz a Boxing and BJJ lesson in his last fight ?
If BJ had half the cardio Diaz does that whole fight would have been as one sided as the first round was…”BJ is washed up” pfft…idiot !

  • Uh huh…a “Dream Fight”, BJ? Srsly? Should have just TPed his trees or greased his driveway with 50 gallons of Vaseline if you harbor such petty feelings towards GSP. Trying to psyche yourself out by saying this is a “dream fight” is just silly & transparent. Hope the young buck mops the mat with you, Baby Jay.

  • bdono554

BJ knows how to hype a fight. He always gets everyone’s attention.

  • I don’t understand the headline. I thought “Dream Fight” meant “Highly anticipated bout between two established contenders”, not “Easy payday to help promote the UFC’s next title fight”.

  • maddawgmar

I would say it’s a dream fight for MacDonald. A “Dream Fight” is either a fight between two legends or an up and comer gets to fight a legend. The latter is only for the up and comer. Just fight your fight BJ, you don’t want this to turn into a nightmare.

  • mma fanatic1982

And whos getting the “easy” fight? Its not a easy fight for niether; bj has to fight a guy who basically demolished condit and has been running through his opps. He is being named the new gsp, and is being said to be the nxt champ by the champ himself. But rory has to fight a man “bj” who has great td defence, and great bjj with great boxing ko power. Only pierre has taken down and kept down bj. Is rory gsp wrestling good? And if so is his bjj defence as good as pierre’s? Cause if and i repeat if rory can take down bj he better not get sloppy and have good defence cause bj is a bjj great. But like i said before all fights start on the feet and rory has a huge disadvantage there! Its a tough fight for both and a hard one to predict. But i still say bj boxing will get him the W. Bj by ko rnd one lol just think rory standup is too bad for a matchup with bj.

  • kaldani15

BJ better take this fight serious and train his ass off or mcdonald will finish him.

  • dongreene

How about BJ and that Afghan bomber with the long name?
