UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejcyk had to undergo surgery on her broken thumb after all.
Jedrzejczyk broke her thumb when making the first defense of her title on June 20 at UFC Fight Night 69. She defeated Jessica Penne, but suffered the injury in the process.

A report on UFC Tonight a few days later said that Jedrzejczyk would need to undergo surgery to repair the damage. But less than 48 hours later, Jedrzejczyk posted on Instagram that her doctor said it didn’t appear as if surgery would be necessary.
“Yesterday, I had an appointment with Dr. (Steven) Shin and surgery was necessary. So today we had the procedure at Kerlan-Jobe (Orthopedic Clinic), surgery was a success and everybody at the hospital was super nice to me,” Jedrzejczyk posted on Thursday.
While it was a bit of a surprise considering the initial communications from the champion, it appears that the surgery won’t sideline Jedrzejczyk for long.
“If everything goes okay, I will be back in time to fight before the end of the year.”
