Donald Cerrone vs. Edson Barboza Set for UFC on Fox 11 Fight Card in Orlando

Posted on by Ken Pishna

Donald Cerrone at WEC 45Fresh off of his victory over Adriano Martins at UFC on Fox 10 in Chicago, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone already has his next fight booked.

Cerrone will next step into the Octagon opposite Edson Barboza, Jr., at UFC on Fox 11 on April 19 in Orlando, Fla., according to UFC officials, who confirmed a Fox Sports report.

Cerrone’s (22-6, 1 NC) most recent fight took place a little over a week ago, when he knocked Martins out with a stunning head kick. (Watch Cerrone’s head kick finish here.) That victory backed up a submission finish of Evan Dunham at UFC 167 in November, putting Cowboy a little further along his road to redemption in his hunt for a UFC title shot.

Barboza (13-1) last stepped in the Octagon in December, winning a majority decision over Danny Castillo. His win over the Team Alpha Male product notched his third consecutive victory since former WEC champion Jamie Varner surprisingly stopped him via TKO midway through 2012.

Cerrone and Barboza are both known for their explosive striking, so this is likely to be an explosive fight that would likely grace the UFC on Fox 11 main card.

A pivotal heavyweight bout between Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne headlines the April 19 card at the Amway Center.

    oh i like this fight

  • uncle

I would like to see Overrated Melendez tested by Barboza still a good fight

    • Aimed With “V”

Why won’t Melendez be able to do with Barboza what Varner did?

      • uncle

Melendez doesn’t punch hard as Varner

        • Aimed With “V”

Based on what? Sanchez fight? Bendo fight?
Yeah, all those guys who knocked Sanchez and Bendo out, they sure hit harder…oh wait…

          • uncle

Go watch the Highlights of both
fighters, and you will see Varner
            has harder punches and Ko’s
Sanchez and Bendo are so irrelevant, to Gil being able to
            finish Barboza like Varner did.
I say he doesn’t have the power
            and I’m sticking with it

          • Aimed With “V”

Why should I need the highlights?
I watched Varner’s fights, and I watched Melendez’ fights. Melendez had plenty of knockdowns, knockouts, he stunned heavy chinned guys. Overall his striking prevailed in most of his fights against serious competition.

I’m not saying Varner is not heavy-handed, but Melendez is on the same level, at least.

          • uncle

The same level as Ben Askren
El nino is overrated period ,he
can’t hang with the best of them
trust me, I use the eyeball test

          • Aimed With “V”

Oh, the eyeball test…it’s even more serious than training UFC…

  • Aimed With “V”

Cerrone is better than Barboza in every aspect of the game.
He has better hands, better MT, better killer instinct.
He will check Barboza’s leg kicks.
His BJJ is WAY better and he will take Barboza to the ground if he wants to.

Cowboy by TKO in the late rounds.

  • David

Finally barboza gets a good match up!! Should be a great fight!!

  • solo

I freakin looove this match up. So excited!!!
I feel like this is gonna be a tough test for Cowboy, and a great opportunity for Barboza. Cerrone likes to stand and bang, but with Barboza you may need to rethink the whole idea. Fight of the night written all over this one.
FOX 11 show already has three great fights scheduled.

  • Kenny Powers

Hell yeah, best news i heard all day

  • brad king

barboza will school the cowboy in standup. teach him he shoulda never came to the ufc

    • Aimed With “V”

He doesn’t “school” anyone worthy in his standup.

  • greentyson

Good Scrap! Would like to see the winner get the winner of Rafa vs Rustam!

  • uncle

I really would like to see Melendez ,get the winner of
this fight or the Guillard vs Johnson ,then he will be exposed for being overrated

    • Aimed With “V”

Wow, dude, you comment twice in the same article about the same thing – Melendez being overrated, when it’s even not a topic.

      You’re a pretty sad troll.
Did Melendez took the lunch money from your daddy in school or something?

      • uncle

Lets talk about dads, I could of been your daddy but the dog jump over the fence and beat me to it
