Dominick Cruz 478x270Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is set to make his long-awaited return at UFC 178 against Takeya Mizugaki, UFC officials confirmed on Tuesday evening.

The bout is added to the developing pay-per-view card, which is set to take place on Sept. 27 at a yet-to-be-determined venue in Las Vegas. initially reported the bout.

Cruz hasn’t fought since 2011, when he defeated Demetrious Johnson at UFC Live 6 in October of that year. Following the bout, Cruz dealt with a number of issues with his knee, needing surgery on two occasions to repair a troubled ACL.

A bout with then-interim champion Renan Barao was to be Cruz’s return from the sidelines, but another injury forced him out of the bout and spurred UFC officials to strip him of the title. Barao was named champion at that time.

Mizugaki has been on a career run since 2012, winning five fights in a row within the Octagon. The Japanese fighter most recently went the distance with Francisco Rivera, winning a unanimous decision at UFC 173 last May.

UFC 178 is currently scheduled to be headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson.

Why isn’t he facing Renan Barao? Barao got owned his last fight.

    • Dragon Kid

It’s better to test him first before feeding him to the sharks so soon.

      • Seth

He won’t make it to the fight anyway, so whats the difference who is he set to fight at this point? .-.

        • Dragon Kid

That’s why he’s paired with a not so big name in case he pulls out again rather be matched with a championship calibre fighter.

          • Seth

Yeah, makes total sense. Im just curious who will replace him

          • Dragon Kid

Assuncao would be my guess since Faber just fought. Wouldn’t mind seeing Michael McDonald fight him.

          • Seth

Those would be pretty fun fights, have to agree 🙂

        • Ian Price

He’s gonna be really careful I think. Better to have not enough training and still show up 90% on fight day than to have great training and risk another injury. Besides, nobody was able to touch him before… It’s like a 70% jones is still good enough to win against most.

    Barao got rematch with dillashaw

    • Dragon Kid

      He sure did.

  • Balls deep

Lame! He will be hurt before fight day…

  • Mihael Hajdin

well if Cruz wins impressively, he should get the next shot at T.J cuz no way Barao is taking that belt back..

    • ac

TJ seems like Cruz but with ko power

      • Ian Price

Except when he knocked down Barao who had not been knocked down in like 25 fights…

        • Maddawgmar

Read the comment again, He is saying TJ has power and Dominick doesn’t…

          • Ian Price

      • Mihael Hajdin

Also I think that T.J is a bit more explosive than Cruz (not dismissing Cruz in any way), but it would be the Cruz-es toughest fight to date if they were to face each other..

    • Ian Price

I would love to see that, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Barao against Cruz. That will be one angry Barao!!

  • Seth

Ok…so who will Mizugaki fight? Faber just won and should be able to fight Takeya, right? Who else is there free to replace Cruz, when he gets hurt?

  • uncle

He needs a tune up fight, he hasn’t fought since the 90’s.

    • Lt. Dangle

      I think it was ’89.

      • Ian Price

        Yep. 1889.

  • Men’s Asses

should be an easy decision win for the “Dominator”

    • Maddawgmar

      If he doesn’t get injured…

  • brad king

maybe cruz and barao shoulda had a title shot elimination match. the winner will get to face the man dillashaw.

  • justin

This guy ain’t ever fighting again. I don’t know why they keep announcing this so far in advance.

  • mmalive

Cruz will have ring rust for sure. If he has a solid game plan and enforces it then win for Cruz. Mizugaki is a decent test for Cruz.

Lol i think the headliner will be ‘Mizugaki Spoils Cruz’s Return’ You heard it here first! But seriously, Mizugaki has a ton of momentum going in, while Cruz has long layoff comeback. I doubt He can finish Mizugaki, and Honestly I see him losing badly. It’s hard to predict though, as we haven’t seen Cruz in awhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile.
