It looks like Urijah Faber will have to wait for the chance to settle his long standing rivalry with Dominick Cruz.

The UFC’s reigning bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has been forced out of UFC 148 after suffering a knee injury in training while working at The Ultimate Fighter Live.

Sources close to the situation confirmed the news to MMAWeekly.com on Monday. UFC president Dana White later confirmed the news on Twitter.

Cruz was coaching alongside his teammates from the Alliance Training Center, teaching his team of lightweights on the first ever installment of TUF on FX. According to sources, Cruz suffered an injury to his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).

The injury occurred while Cruz was working with his team, while also training for his showdown to Faber on July 7 in Las Vegas.

Cruz being forced out of the bout now leaves Urijah Faber without an opponent for the UFC 148 card, and it’s unclear at this time if there will be a replacement or if Faber will be pulled.

MMAWeekly.com will have more information on this breaking news when it becomes available.

was really looking forward to this fight….

Lost bisping vs boetsch and now Cruz vs Faber. “the most stacked card in UFC history” is getting a lot less stacked

This sort of flattens half the purpose for the show which is to hype a fight scheduled for an upcoming PPV. Wonder if they’ll pull Cruz from the show and replace him with someone else or if Faber would even be willing to do that. Lot of risk in taking another fight and risk losing a title shot.

They’ll figure it out, Zuffa is good at quick thinking and “crisis” management.

    Wow thats huge news!

Faber should fight Renan Barao to determine the number 1 contender. Barao is also on the 148 card and his bout with Ivan Menjivar never really made sense to me.

    • KBEsq

I would like to see Barao vs. M. McDonald for a title shot. I think your recommendation makes a lot of sense, but I really think the UFC is going to push Faber to wait it out. They want Faber vs. Cruz.

I could do without Dominick Cruz, that guy couldn’t finish his lunch in 25 minutes let alone a fight

  • jonnypatrick

That’s why he is the reigning UFC Champ… To be the man you have to beat the man and Faber failed to do that in the first fight. I assume you don’t like Carlos Condit either…

    • mich1fan

sorry people like guys who actually fight and try to finish. i have never seen the decisionater even attempt to finish someone. its boring to watch a guy run around the cage and not engage or go after it. he just jumps in, throws 3 or 4 punches that dont land, then a baby leg kick and jumps back out. all he does is try to squeak out a decision.

      • macgrubber

its ultimate fighting championship not ultimate knockout championship. Some people want to see guys who actually use their advantages such as speed and have a gameplan and use it like cruz and condit and not just stand their swinging punches.

  • jonnypatrick

Their first UFC fight, I need to clarify that for all you haters. I know they fought before that fight and Faber won.

    • phrankthetank

      In a different weight class

  • MaritalArtist

Yeah, that Barao idea is not bad at all. Pretty much grants him a title eliminator fight vs Uriah. I previously suggested to move the Boetsch fight back, but I’m assuming that is not an easy feat.

  • rogerdoger

Yup throw barao in there and mix it up

This news should improve the ratings for this weeks TUF as people tune in to see the details.

Its so disappointing that Cruz got hurt, the rubber match would have been amazing. Faber was on such a tear lately. The UFC has to pair Faber up with Barao now to set up the next title contender. Not sure if Barao is ready for Faber but now is as good a time as ever.
