Diego Sanchez at UFC on Versus 3

With UFC 135 just a couple of weeks away, the co-main event has taken a hit as Diego Sanchez has been forced off the card with a broken hand.

Sanchez was slated to take on former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes at UFC 135 in Denver on Sept 24.

UFC President Dana White announced the news via his Twitter account on Monday.

“Diego Sanchez broke his hand,” White wrote. “Looking for a replacement for Hughes.”

Sanchez was facing Hughes looking for his third win in a row since returning to the welterweight division, but it appears he will have to wait until another show to continue his streak.

Matt Hughes has been out of action since last year’s UFC 123 card when he lost by knockout to former welterweight champion B.J. Penn.

According to White’s message, Hughes will remain on the card, but matchmaker Joe Silva will be working on Labor Day to secure a replacement.

MMAWeekly.com will have more information on Hughes’ new opponent when it becomes available.

    THIS BLOWS

Hughes vs Sanchez was like a dream fight. Rumor is that Koscheck will get the spot now, which isn’t nearly as good a match

  • BigGuy

A dream fight? Really? I didn’t see it like that at all. Sanchez getting injured is ok with me. I’d rather see Hughes fight anyone except Sanchez.

  • iWin

I feel bad for him Sanchez. A win over Hughes would of been huge for him. Hope he has a speedy recovery and fights another big name soon. As far as a dream match up id rather see Sanchez vs Fitch or Koscheck.

  • Darren2112

would love to see Hughes knock out Kos. More than Hughes vs Sanchez. but that would have been a good fight…

its hard to post when you’ve been drinkin all afternoon. Happy Labour Day!!
