UFC featherweight Dennis Siver was fined and suspended on Thursday by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The commission voted unanimously to suspend Siver for nine months, fined him $19,800 (30 percent of his fight purse), and changed his UFC 168 victory over Manny Gamburyan to a no contest result after having failed his post-fight drug test for the bout.

The commission also required Siver to reimburse Nevada for the cost of the failed test, as well as for the cost of the interpreter the provided for his hearing on Thursday.

Siver tested positive for human chorionic gonadotropin (hGC) following the Dec. 28 bout in Las Vegas.

hCG is human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced during pregnancy, according to the Mayo Clinic. As a prescription medication, hCG is used mainly to treat fertility issues.  It has also been used to treat anabolic steroid induced hypogonadism, as it can stimulate testosterone production, according to the National Institute of Health.

Siver issued a statement in March following the revelation of the positive test, saying that he did not knowingly ingest the banned substance, but explained that it was due to a mix-up with a new trainer he hired because his longtime coach, Niko Sulenta, could not assist him as he was diagnosed with “severe cancer.”

“I do not want to blame anyone for this result and I take full responsibility for my gullible and careless behavior,” said Siver. “It was my mistake and it was grossly negligent. But I distance myself from any kind of doping. In my previous sixteen UFC fights, not even the smallest banned substance has been detected.”

As a final condition of his suspension, Siver will have to pass a drug test if he hopes to apply for a license in Nevada in the future.

Bulls–t. Dudes use that s–t (by injections only) to cycle off their steroids without crashingvhard!

    Es normal.

It’s real simple. He juices. He uses compounds with very short half-lives, and when it gets close to fight time he comes off cycle and uses HCG to kickstart his boys and get them functional again. He failed to realize that part of the testing would include HCG detection. Not just steroids itself. I think it would surprise a lot of people how many of the fighters over the years have done this.

What are the long term implications of that? Doesn’t sound too healthy to me.

      • Patrick Mccoy

Bad. You can eventually cause a permanent shutdown or reduction in function of the testes. Then you’re just screwed. All of the fighters in their mid 30’s that were on TRT?? Likely due to a self-imposed shutdown right before going to the Dr. or damage caused by long term steroid use.

I’m not sure why HCG is a banned substance, as it only helps to get one’s testosterone back into production after a cycle of any synthetic testosterone. However, it does seem that he may be using other substances and used the HCG for just that purpose.

    • Patrick Mccoy

HCG is banned because as a stand-alone drug, it can stimulate your body to produce more testosterone than what might otherwise be natural. And they’ve called weed a banned substance as well, so that should tell you something.

Yes, I’m aware, Patrick. I just don’t think it increases one’s testosterone production to make a difference. Yes, as in the case of weed, it’s a banned substance and we’re all supposed to play by the rules so the sanctions are warranted. Lance said the same thing. . .

I’m sorry, but you have to be a complete, total f%cking idiot to use steroids, in today’s day and age of aggressive crack-downs on anabolic steroids. I just don’t understand why ANY fighter fighting in a high-profile org like the UFC would continue using steroids, as the risk is clearly not worth the reward… stupidity at it’s finest.

Because they all use it. lol
      Some are just more stupid
