Two losses in a row spells the end of the road for Danny ‘Boy’ Downes in the UFC.
The lightweight fighter announced via his Twitter account that he has been released from the promotion as of Friday.
“Zuffa has “exercised its right in to accelerate the term of its promotional and other obligations.” In other words I’m cut,” wrote Downes.
The tough as nails lightweight who trains under Duke Roufus in Wisconsin went 0-2 in the Octagon after picking up a 1-1 record in the WEC prior the promotion moving it’s fighters over to the UFC.
Downes a lot of heart in both of his losses to Jeremy Stephens and Ramsey Nijem, but couldn’t put together the winning combination in either fight.
Still considered very young in the sport, there’s no doubt that Downes could work his way back to the UFC with some solid wins outside the organization, but he’ll have to pursue those opportunities to get the call back from UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.
Downes is the latest fighter to receive a pink slip from the UFC. Earlier this week, former ‘Ultimate Fighter’ competitor Eliot Marshall was handed his walking papers after two straight losses in the UFC as well.
