ROY-NELSON-UFC-TUF-16-POST-PRESS-478x270Heavyweights Roy Nelson and Daniel Cormier have been rumored to be a fight in the making.  Both have wanted the bout to happen and now it will on Oct. 19 at UFC 166 in Houston.

The Houston Chronicle first reported the matchup and UFC officials confirmed the bout as the UFC 166 co-main event on Monday.

Cormier (12-0) is a former Olympic wrestler who transitioned into mixed martial arts.  He made his professional MMA debut in 2009 and has steadily climbed the heavyweight ranks, winning the 2012 Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

He made his long awaited UFC debut on April 20, defeating former titleholder Frank Mir by unanimous decision.

Nelson (19-8) has been a fan favorite since making his way into the UFC by winning the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter reality series.  Known for his ability to absorb an incredible amount of damage and for his one-punch knockout power, Nelson knocked out Brendan Schaub and Stefan Struve in his first two fights in the UFC.  He’s lost to top contenders Junior dos Santos, Fabricio Werdum and Frank Mir, but has faced the top competition inside the organization.

Prior to the fight being officially announced, the two had gotten into exchanges on Twitter.  Last week, Cormier wrote up an informal bout agreement and signed it before tweeting it to Nelson.  Nelson quickly inked his signature and sent it back.

UFC 166 takes place at the Toyota Center in Houston and is headlined by the third matchup between heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and former titleholder Junior dos Santos.

It would be great if Bruce would announce the fight being for “the undisputed over-rated title of the world!”

Not sure if I completely agree, but your post was hilarious nonetheless!

u r doomb if you think DC is overrated.
Roy is definitely overrated. UFC had him #5 right before the Miosic fight. WTF? FYI, Mir was ranked over than Roy.

I just don’t see any reason why people would think that DC is overrated other than the fact that he is from SF. He beat Bigfoot, Barnett, and Mir. Yea yea yea. You can make excuses about each of those fighters such as them not being at prime or being overrated.

But who else other than JDS and Cain has three consecutive wins against top 10 guys.

      • Werdoomb

Mir was ranked lower than Roy*

This should be a good fight but makes no sense at all. DC undefeated and Roy coming off a bad loss? Should have been DC/Werdum & Nelson/Hunt, but whatever

    • Hugh Shakeshaft

Agreed. The only possible justification is if DC actually comes in weighing something like 215 and he’s really dropping weight on the way to 205. If he’s the same old 230 something DC then what then hell?

      • Kenny powers

Thats probly what it is, cuz if he wanted to be a serious contender at HW he wouldnt be fighting big country. But yeah if he comes in at the same weight this fight is pointless for DC.

        • Werdoomb

I would NOT try to experiment anything that risky against Roy Nelson, even though Roy is a stepping stone of the HW division.

So I doubt DC will come in at 215.

A good experiment would be against low ranked LHW like Brandon Vera.

i actually like that a lot, didnt vera say something about going back up to heavyweight not to long ago? id like to see a smaller dc fight brandon vera at heavyweight, wouldnt have to see vera looking like a skeleton at 205 either.

Agree!!! What about Stipe? the ufc just kicked him to the curb or what, he freaken destroyed GORTHO Nelson.

      fingers crossed

I have been waiting for some one to welcome DC with a massive punch or kick to the face so lets see if he can pin nelson against the cage.
