Daniel Cormier vs. Roy Nelson Being Considered for UFC 166: Velasquez vs. dos Santos III

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Daniel CormierDaniel Cormier has been constructing his move from heavyweight down to light heavyweight for quite some time.

He’s currently in the midst of working his way down to 205 pounds, planning to fight one more time at heavyweight before making the drop. And there seems to be no shortage of opponents for him before he finally debuts at light heavyweight.

UFC president Dana White recently confirmed that Fabricio Werdum asked him to fight Cormier after Werdum defeated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in his most recent fight.

Cormier said he was fine with that fight, but White may have other plans for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion.

White told Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports that he is currently in negotiations with Roy Nelson for a new contract. Nelson fulfilled his last contract with a loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 in June.

White told Iold, “If he re-signs Nelson in time, he plans to pair him with Daniel Cormier at UFC 166 on the Velasquez-dos Santos III undercard.”

UFC 166: Velasquez vs. dos Santos III is slated for Oct. 19 at the Toyota Center in Houston. The rubber match between heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and challenger Junior dos Santos headlines the fight card.

I got go with my boy big country ! I don’t like DC, I know he is good fighter but he will never fight Cain.

    • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

If DC doesn’t plan on fighting Cain then he shouldn’t take this fight, he should just get himself in gear and start losing some weight. Everyone says he’s a contender at LHW, it’s not like he would have a long way to a title shot.

      • Mark McDowall

Agreed 100% If your not willing to fight for the title then hang em up or get the hell out of the way and let someone else get in line.

        • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

Not to be cliche but we seen this with Chuck and Tito. Chuck was straight up about it, he wanted that belt. Any good teammate would welcome his training partner/friend to the fight if he earned it by beating all the top guys.

      • james velasquez

exactly. i hope this fight will not happen, and DC goes down soon so he can challenge Jon. JUST DO IT DC!

  • Asa

Dc just beat a top ten fighter and roy just loss to a eh fighter. Cmon. Dc should get somebody worthy too fighy, somebody who helps move his rank up wiyh a victory.

    • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

Stipe is 4-1 in the UFC. Only 1 loss in his career. He was really over looked and not given any credit in that fight against Nelson. Everybody said he was going to get KO’d. I wouldn’t say he’s an “eh fighter” But I do agree DC should be fighting a top 5 guy and be in talks for a title shot.

    • Cereal Killer

He’s ranked #3, he can’t move up any further. Cain and JDS are already scheduled to fight.

    • Mark McDowall

A top 10 Frank Mir??? Thats an accomplishment…Mir has been past it for a couple years now. He is a gate keeper to the top 10…thats about it. Thats not a great feat to be honest…

And Stipe even though he isn’t ranked…he is a fast up an comer and will give alot of top 10 heavy weights issues in the near future.

      • Werdoomb

If Mir is a gatekeeper to the top 10, tell me who the top ten are!!

Who are these “top ten” you have in mind????

  • Wolf Ticket

I would sooo love to see this fight at 205.

  • Mark McDowall

I hope Nelson goes out and destroys Cormier. He is VASTLY over rated, and his fights are all boring. He has an undefeated record against a bunch of nobodies. Winning the strikeforce grand prix is like winning the AA baseball world series. Looks good on your resume but in the grand scheme of things it means jack.

Nelson is his first real opponent and I think he will beat him all the way down to 205!

    • julian moran

Cormier just beat Mir (who just beat Nelson).

Big foot, who just fought for the title.

Barnett who is another top 5 HW.
The only 2 fighters one could make an argument for being ranked above him are Cain and Dos Santos.

      • Mark McDowall

Mir who has been past it for a couple years now. And when they fought Nelson he was sick as hell and almost didn’t make the fight. Mir is nothing but the gate keeper to the top 10…only reason he is ranked is because theres a huge drop off after the top 10 for HW.

Bigfoot…who did so great in that title fight and all his other fights against REAL top 10 opponents! And same as Cormier hasn’t beaten a legit top contender pretty much ever…and ask most people and they will say he was right place right time to get that title shot.

And Barnett…what can we say about Barnett…Multiple time winner of the steroid user of the night award…only fighter to single handedly close an entire promotion…hasn’t fought a tough opponent in probably 7 years(who he lost to btw).

Ranks are only #’s you cant just say he’s # whatever and it means something…if his record is full of has beens, never was’ and who’s, then its not as impressive.

        • Cereal Killer

I get it. The HW division is kinda like a hillbilly beauty pageant, picking the top 10 is the best of the worst. But, his last three fights have been against top 10 guys. (I refuse to count the Staring fight, he had to finish the SF contract)
That being said, I’m not impressed with him either.

          • Mark McDowall

Exactly!! Lets be real…SF was by far the minor leagues of MMA. You can’t compare any SF division to its UFC equivilant…

I do like the “hillbilly beauty pageant” comment though…

          • Asa

Frank beats everybody but the champs! That not a gate keeper! Roy is the gate keeper, he just started winning again and its cause dana gave him sub par opps. D.c is a legit top 5. S.f dont mean anything lol thats why alot of S.F fightets have been winning in the ufc huh lol against stiff comp.

          • Mark McDowall

Alot of SF guys have been winning? Melendez…lost. Rockhold…lost. Marquardt…lost. Cotoure…lost….I can keep going. If I remember rightly the SF guys have a less than .500 winning % in the UFC so far.

          • Werdoomb

dude, you sound like such a TUF noob.

SF HW division was legit. You sound like such a TUF noob.

Obviously, you’ve never heard of Barnett until very recently. Big Foot is a weak opponent? He would kill Roy Nelson. Period. But wait…what about Mir…? Well, you made up an excuse for him huh?

Since when is beating Mir, Barnett, and Big Foot not impressive???

          • Mark McDowall

Oh trust me man Im no noob. Ive been watching and competing since the early pride days.

Barnett WAS good…just like Mir WAS good. They are both over the hill now. They have had great careers but they are in the twilight now and can’t be considered contenders.

As far as Bigfoot killing Roy Nelson…I don’t know so much. I think it would be a great fight…don’t see either of them getting killed.

        • julian moran

So you are saying that Roy Nelson is a better fighter then Mir, Big foot and Barnett?

          • Mark McDowall

At this moment in time I would say yes for the simple fact that he has been fighting a higher level of competition.

          • Asa

Higher level of comp hahahaha. Last 4 fights for both!
Roy: ed herman, mitrone, kongo, stipe! Cans!

Mir: roy nelson (beat lol), big nog beat, dos santos lost (champion),y D.C lost (champion). He only loses to champs. He beat kongo too lol ig thats your only kind of top fighter you give roy a nod for. So whos fighting ppl at a higher level? Dana gave roy these cans so he can stay relivant.

          • julian moran

In that case you need to look at their records, because you are clearly misinformed… Here are Roy Nelson’s last 4 opponents:
Stipe Miocic, Cheick Kongo, Matt Mitrione, Dave Herman.

The last top 10 fighter Nelson fought was Werdum, who destroyed Nelson. That was 5 fights ago. Come to think of it Nelson has never beat a top ten fighter.

      • Proffset

        You can’t be serios man..
Barnett is top 10 but far away from top 5

  • greentyson

NO Way, one guy coming off a loss & another a win. DC should be fighting Vai Cavalo or Overeem if Brown gets injured before they fight! Or at least Stipe! Big Country v Hunto or Gonzaga… And yes at 205 OK

  • Jason Spangler

I guess as these guys are both heavyweights destined for 205, it’s likely to be a fair fight. Some sort of ‘unstoppable force vs immovable object’ turn-of-phrase is coming to mind…

  • South.NZ.MMA

Super fight between Heavyweight champ C.V and Light-heavy champ J.J. i would be more than happy to pay to watch that fight more than D.c Vs J.j.

  • Manuel Lopez

Pointless. This is a case of Cormier wasting his full potential because his friend and team mate is the champ in the weight division Cormier is in. If it were anyone else as the current hw champ Cormier would have gone for a title shot long ago. Undefeated, SF hw Grand Prix champ, dominated Mir… Those are the credentials of a true contender! Instead he’s in some weird battle of words with Jon Jones (and fails to lose the weight and go for Jones’ title), and looking for pointless fights with hw gatekeepers. In MMA the window of opportunity is short, in a flash your chance will be gone. I fear this is the case for DC. If he gets beaten by a Nelson or a Werdum… DC will have been one if the biggest fools in the sport.

If Mark Munoz can go from 260 to his walking weight of 210-200, why can’t these two bohemians dedicate themselves & do the same?

    • Werdoomb

because they have bigger frame than munoz munoz at 250 is fat out of shape.
