Daniel Cormier Unsure Whether He Will Drop to 205 Pounds: “It Will Be a Team Decision”

Daniel Cormier Strikeforce Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier was dominant in defeating Frank Mir in his Octagon debut at UFC on Fox 7 on Saturday night in San Jose, Calif., but the 34-year-old is still unsure whether his future remains in the heavyweight division or if he will make the cut down to 205 pounds.

“It’s really going to be a team decision. We’ve got to get together with the UFC and with my management team and figure out what the next step is,” Cormier said.

“I’m just happy to be working for (the UFC). This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole career. It’s a dream come true just to be here right now. I’ve had a very long athletic career. I’ve always laughed when Dana said there’s jitters that come with this. But man, I was nervous today. You want to do so well, and I didn’t fight the fight I wanted to.

“More than anything I got tired. I’ve never felt tired in a fight. I think it was my nerves. I went in there and fought as well as I could.”

Despite the controlling win, Cormier, who is now 12-0 in his MMA career, doesn’t feel that his performance warrants a title shot.

“Even if they say you’re going to fight Cain Velasquez next, I don’t think that performance warranted a title shot. We’ll get together and figure it out. If they say, ‘Well Daniel, if your intention is to be a 205-pounder down the line and we need you to do it now,’ then I guess that’s what I need to do.”

Man…based on his physique, he has a hell of a lot of work ahead of him if he will make 205. I think he’s got a great skill set, but like Rashad has said about a drop to 185…lifestyle changes have to be made. Dropping 30 pounds seems like a huge self-discipline commitment. I’m not trying to dis him at all…I just think if I was 12-0, a highly decorated wrestler with some pretty special MMA striking and speed…would friendship be the deciding factor in me changing my whole life…and my comfort zone, just to avoid fighting a friend somewhere down the road? No would be my answer.

Or…like many dumbo redneck posters would say, “its all fat!! You can lose 50lbs of fat and be a leaner, meaner machine at a lower weight division!!!”

  • david

He can fight few more fights at Hw then drop down for title shot. He can do it Cormier is Olympic Wrestler and just need to hire Mike Dolce to help him with his diet . Jones vs Cormier is bound to happen sooner or later.

    • falloniousWolf

diet?? He is fine the way he is.

Cormier probably eats a lot after working out.

I mean…so long as the dude can perform…who cares?

re: A fight with Jon “Bones’ Jones.

If Jones was foolish enough to quickly jump to heavy, I would favor Daniel in this situation. Then again, many heavys too.

At light heavy, Daniel would be too emaciated, and would not be able to contend with Jon’s speed, strength and skill set. At light heavy, I would go with Bones Jones by submission, after a severe beating.

    • Trevor

He would be emaciated? He’s a big slob and should lose some of that fat so he can be a better athlete period!

      • Cptmats

An Olympic level athlete needs you to tell him how to be a better athlete ?
        Your an Idiot !

        • falloniousWolf

          Trevor = redneck

      • falloniousWolf

Like all red-necks, you equate big lean muscle with six-pack with fighting ability.

Cormier has been working out everyday for the last two decades of his life.

Lose some fat??? Bro…he beat Mir who looks better than him.

Daniel Cormier is a compact HW fighter that relies on speed and explosiveness against larger slower fighters. I am not sure that losing fat would make him a better fighter at LHW.

Go look at other fighters that were not successful after a weight class change. For example, Igor Vovchnchyn. Losing that fat took the wind out of him.

  • tyrone

Cormier and mir both looked very average. I like cormier but he better stay away from j jones!!! I cant stand j jones and want him to lose title, but cormier wont be able to do the job. Terrible fight

    • falloniousWolf

      Horrible fight?

I don’t agree at all. It went to decision.

I think people thought Cormier was going to steamroll thru Mir. And it was fortunate for Mir that he wasn’t steamrolled. He survived the cage uppercuts.

It was a fight between Cormier than a perennial top 10 in Mir.

You thought the Barnett fight was horrible too?

All I’m saying is DC can take a liver kick.

    • Hugh Shakeshaft

Gustaavson is going to give Bones a lot of trouble. What he did to Shogun was nasty.

  • Cereal Killer

Lol… a team decision! It’s more of a “if Cain beats Bigfoot” decision. Bones would crush him at LHW.

Cormier and Nelson should fight at either HW or LHW. The LHW division has plenty of guys in line right now so it wouldn’t be right if Cormier went down in weight and got a title shot against Jones right away when you have Phil Davis, Gustaf, Glover Tex, Gegard and Machida around. Even if Cain did lose to Bigfoot it would just set up a possible rubber match for them so Cormier should move down and take at least two fights at LHW.

  • Trevor

That was a horrible fight between two guys who should focus way more on speed and weight loss (especially in Cormier’s case!) Mir was way better when he was lighter and new his place was not as a striker, he has a couple lame fights left. As far as Cormier goes I say hit Jenny Craig !

    • Trevor

      I meant knew his place

  • Hugh Shakeshaft

I don’t think he’ll drop. Why? I bet DC and Cain are professional enough to fight each other and remain gym-mates. They don’t seem to care about the emotional BS so many other fighter do (Bones and Rashaad). I see them fighting, staying together at AKA, and laughing all the way to the bank. DC is not gonna eat rice cakes for six months for the same pay he’d get if he ate pork chops and fought Cain. No way!
