Daniel Cormier - Strikeforce Grand Prix ChampionStrikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier already has his next fight slated… well, at least the date.

Cormier will fight the final fight of his Strikeforce contract on Sept. 29 in Sacramento, Calif. Strikeforce announced the date during Saturday night’s broadcast of Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy on Showtime.

No opponent has yet been revealed, but at least Cormier won’t have to wait as long as it took the Grand Prix to play out for his final fight under the Strikeforce banner. Once he has that fight, Cormier will likely move over to the UFC, as Strikeforce’s heavyweight division is being shuttered.

Cormier is a Cinderella story, fighting his way into the heavyweight tournament in a reserve bout with Jeff Monson. When then-Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem fell out of the tournament due to an injury, Cormier stepped in, knocking out Antonio Silva in the semifinals before toppling Josh Barnett for top honors in the final.

Cormier is currently rocking an unblemished 10-0 record.

Mousasi makes the most sense unless they bring someone in or maybe out of retirement like Fedor. According to the Strikeforce website, they only have 2 heavyweights on roster LOL. Cormier and Barnett…Mousasi is top LHW.

  • shakejunt

maybe werdum? hoping they match barnett up with mir

  • Mario

Too bad Fedor retired, or else he’d be the perfect man for the job. I’m not saying he would win, but it would be a good fight for him to get back to form if he beat Cormier.

    • Lesnardo

Fedor is done. He had an amazing career and is not spending his time at a Russian Buffet with his two daughters.

Just look at why Nog, Sylvia, Mir, and Arlovski can’t retire yet. Because all of them did not have as fullfiling a career as the one Fedor had. Those guys, even in their prime, had something to prove. Fedor didn’t really have anything to prove towards the end of his career.

      Fedor is cashing out.

  • Musasi he to small, Fedor would be great, Werdum he with UFC, unless he rematches Barnett…..?

  • They could exploit the partnership with M-1 Global to bring some HW like Garner, Guram or the estonian giant … or ask to other promotions if they could “loan” an HW … ProElite, CageWarriors and other organizations have interesting HWs …

  • Obarmarama

Time to bring back Tank Abbot…

    • RubeKegal

LOL or can you imagine Kimbo?

    Todd Duffee

Todd Duffee would be a very good pick. His striking is a bit better than Cormier’s I believe and hes strong as an ox. His wrestling is no where near Cormier’s though. Still a very interesting matchup. Otherwise the only other guy I see them bringing in is Arlovski which I also believe he has the tools to win but his chin has took some serious punishment over the years.

  • cinimod4

I agree that Todd Duffee would be a good pick but the problem is he signed an exclusive four-fight deal with Super Fight League in february 2012 so…

    • Lesnardo

      Todd Duffee has an attitude…why?

Danial Comier is a legit heavyweight. Not sure if he’s at the level of Cain or jds. He dose deserve a bekt in Strikeforse an perhaps run for a shot at UFC top 5 fighters contention. Overreem would be a bit tuff for him in the striking area of fighting although in the clinch take downs an ground game he’s a legit heavyweight. • joeshine

Cormier would beat Jon Jones at say 220 lbs.

    • RubeKegal

Yeah ok retard, because he beat Barnett and Pezao? Jones is better in every regard, he’s got a much longer reach, is more athletic and he has made great wrestlers look terrible. How do you come up with a statement like that. Cain destroyed Pezao in mere seconds and is better than Cormier but noone is saying Cain would dismantle JBJ, because he wouldn’t plain and simple. Neither would Cormier.

      • Lesnardo

I am more convinced than ever that there is something wrong with RubeKegal.

Cain would beat JBJ at HW.

Dude, your JBJ nuthugging is out of control. I admit that he is the best LHW ever. But JDS/Cain/Overeem are the best heavyweights ever.

        Can JBJ beat Mir? Yes!
Can JBJ beat Carwin/Brock? Maybe yes Maybe no.
Can JBJ beat JDS/Cain/Overeem? I would have to say no at this time.

        • RubeKegal

your mental…..Bones has never been in trouble in any fight he has participated in. Look at the top level wrestlers he made look like children:

Shogun has never looked so bad against someone.
Bonnar has never looked so bad against someone.
Machida never got owned that badly.
Rampage was never in the fight with JBJ.

Cain? Really? The same Cain who got owned in 1 min by JDS, the same Cain who was dropped 3 times by Chieck friggin Kongo? The same Cain who made Denis Stojnic look like a legitimate contender?

You are smoking some good stuff my friend.

  • alhmiel

Kimbo slice would be a great opponent. Fedor also.
