Daniel Cormier - Strikeforce Grand Prix ChampionDaniel Cormier will receive his wish for his first UFC fight, as he will face former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC on Fox 7 on April 20 in San Jose, Calif.

Sources close to the fight confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that the bout has been agreed to by both competitors, and should be signed in the coming days. Yahoo! Sports first reported the confirmation on Tuesday. UFC officials later confirmed the reports.

Following an undefeated run in Strikeforce, which included capturing the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix title, Daniel Cormier capped off his career with the promotion by defeating Dion Staring last Saturday night.

Now the former two-time Olympian will transfer to the UFC and look to make his presence known right away as he faces a former heavyweight champion in April.

Frank Mir will look to get back to the top of the division by facing Cormier after losing to Junior dos Santos in his last fight in May 2012.

Mir was scheduled to meet Cormier last November, but a training injury forced him out of the fight. Now the former champion will welcome one of the top fighters in the division to the UFC in April.

The Cormier vs. Mir fight is expected to be the co-main event for the card headed to San Jose on April 20 alongside the lightweight title bout between champion Benson Henderson and former Strikeforce titleholder Gilbert Melendez, which UFC officials also confirmed.

  • So glad this fight is happening. Perfect style match up. Now everyone gets their wish and get to test Cormier tested by another high level fighter. Mir has been in mma so long he’s a good fight to see where Cormier stands. Bigfoot and Barnnett were very nice wins now he needs to keep it up.

Agreed, should be a good test for both guys. If Cormier loses it could take all the wind out of his sails though. Hopefully he does decide to drop to 205, seems like the only one’s stepping up to fight Jones there are 185ers

      • I don’t know why but I just though about Sonnen/Cormier at 205. Seems like a good match up for some reason.

        • bajafox

I bet Sonnen would take it too

          • Forgive me if we discussed this already but do you have Jones over Sonnen for their fight? I won’t count Jones out but Sonnen is an olympic caliber greco roman wrestler who sets the pace. I give him the edge.

          • bajafox

As far as I know I don’t think I’ve posted any opinions on that match up. In theory Jones should demolish Sonnen but I’m not taking anything away from Sonnen. If he doesn’t make a mistake, I’m sure it is more than possible to see the upset of the year, or decade, happen that night.

          • I’m just excited to see him at 205. Can’t imagine how good he will feel without that cut. Guy is pretty big.

I see this fight going the same way the Lesnar fight did. Strong wrestlers like Cormier are notorious for getting caught in submissions. Now I know lesnar isn’t the same caliber of wrestler as Cormier but he was still a strong wrestler. No one has really put cormier on his back like Mir can. Plus he will be giving up 25-35lbs to Mir.

I think the smartest thing Cormier can do is get Mike Dolce on the horn and get down to 205 asap.

      • Him at 205 would be great. A lot of great fights there to.

        • Mark McDowall

But can he make it? He didn’t compete in the olympics because his body gave out after he was trying to drop.

          • I honestly don’t know if he was working with anyone to help him with nutrition and conditioning. Mike Dolce could help. Combat Science offers advice lol. How about we do Big Country vs Cormier. Loser has to go get a six pack of abs and fight JJ lol.

daniel is supposed to be a top dog, he should’ve been calling out someone top ranked instead of just trying to beat a name.

As a big fan of Mir, I am rooting for Mir. That being said, this fights is going to be fought on the feet. Cormier isn’t gonna take Mir down, ask Nog why? Mir will not take Cormier down, can’t. Mir has wrestling background but high school state champ v Olympian. Come on. This is a great match, I am a little worried about the power of Cormier but boxing, might lean toward Mir slightly. We’ll see.

Anyone else feel like Henderson is going to murder Melendez??
