Urijah FaberUFC bantamweight challenger and TUF Live coach Urijah Faber was recently left without a UFC 148 opponent when fellow 135-pound champion Dominick Cruz was forced off of the card with a blown knee.

His situation won’t remain that way much longer, however.

UFC president Dana White will announce a new opponent for Faber on Friday night’s episode of The Ultimate Fighter: Live. The bout will be for the interim UFC bantamweight championship.

“So what’s going to happen is Urijah Faber will, he’s going to fight still. He’s going to fight on the same card,” said White when announcing Cruz’s injury. “Now, I’m looking for the right opponent. The guy who deserves this shot at Urijah Faber.”

The short list of candidates includes Renan Barão, Michael McDonald, and Ivan Menjivar.

Tune in to TUF Live on Friday night for the announcement.

So does this mean they’re gonna bring the new opponent onto the show to make the announcement? That would be a little tense, IMO.

    Barão, PLEASE!

  • MaritalArtist

It should be barao. Doesn’t matter that he’s already scheduled to fight someone else. The entire point is to get a title shot, so give it to him if he deserves it. Then McDonald can fight the winner, then Cruz can fight the winner of that.

  • Has to be Barão. His record will be an easy PR / marketing angle for the Zuffa hype machine.

  • has to be barao…let menjivar fight mcdonald or jabouin

Renan Barao was added to this card in case something like this happened. UFC always has a back up in case one of the main event fighters gets injured/has too much testosterone etc.

As nasty as McDonald is, you can’t deny a dude that hasnt lost in over 7 years.

Tey can totally deny a dude that has not lost in 7 years. I too believe Renan deserves the shot, but I would not be surprised to see Dana give it to McDonald thinking that Urijah has a better chance to beat him, and then they can still promote Faber/Cruz III. Even though the interim title should be defended we all know how much the UFC loves keeping their belts on ice indefinitely.

  • the UFC would def. love Faber to hold a title even if its the interim belt…they wasted no time making an interim belt up for him upon finding out Cruz was injured…makes you wonder if he wasnt in the picture if they would have done the same for 2 other fighters as quick as they did…Faber is prob. the most well known guy of the lighter weight classes (FW and BW)…w/ that being said…its just wrong if they dont give the shot to Barao…he deserves it…McDonald will get his shot eventually but hes very young…let him get another fight under his belt…

I agree. McDonald is only 21 years old right now and is only getting better. Torres was one of the first “big names” that he fought (and destroyed). The UFC wants to build up guys fighting for the title so they can sell the PPV and McDonald is probably just another big knockout away from that.

I’m thinking Ken Flo is gonna drop down.

    Just kidding.
