Dana White Tells Fighters “Go Get The Money”; Rails on Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger

Dana White UFC on Fox 8 Post_9291It seems that any time UFC president Dana White is addressed lately, he’s talking about fighter pay… and Saturday night following UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle was no different.

But with a sour taste left in his mouth following a disappointing co-main event bout between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger, White fell back on the same words he’s been saying for some time now. If you want to make big money in the fight game, go get it.

Be exciting. Bring your A-Game. Put it on the line and be the champion that you aspire to be.

That’s paraphrasing, of course, but not far off the mark.

Check out what UFC president Dana White had to say in his UFC on Fox 8 post-fight scrum with members of the media, as he went off on fighter pay and railed on Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger.

Completely agree. You are in the fight game, you are in the sports entertainment business. Your job is to fight and entertain. I think the UFC needs to implement some sort of fine for this type of fight. Similar to Pride’s yellow card system. Bottom line is Both guys went nowhere in this fight. In fact both took a step back IMO. Other than everyday fans bitching about this performance, no one is gonna mention those two names.

    • Ray Lane

While I agree this is sports entertainment, and being entertaining is part of the game. I didn’t have much of a problem with the fight. It wasn’t fight of the night material, but I didn’t hate it either.

I thought Rory did what he needed to. He kept moving forward and kept striking. I do think Jake was very hesitant, and didn’t really ‘go for it’, but a lot of that was because Rory was so technical with the jabs.

      • John Bunch

I’m a fan of both of these guys…when the fight started I pulled my 8 year old away from the computer to watch the fight, assuring him it was going to be special. It was special, as in special needs, as in you have to have a serious amount of patience necessary to deal with the special amount of boredom he/I experienced watching the fight. Rory did counter-attack very effectively, scoring points when and where he needed…I made careful notes of his effectiveness in between the naps the fight induced in me…I hate most of the dumb asses that boo fights…but this one deserved it. Lost respect for both guys watching this “fight”…

      • Bugster

Is true Rory did move forward but everytime Ellenberger tried to come close to make it a fight, he move backwards. Rory wanted to win the fight by that tap jab and Ellenberger didn’t want to get hit by that tap jab.

    • David Huenecke

I completely agree. Based on the performance of both fighters I wouldnt give either of them a title fight. How can you sell a fight against GSP when your last fight was as boring as this fight was. They were booed from the middle of the second round up until the last bell. Terrible fight overall. Just a jab fest.

      • Gary Fredericks

Yes and no….Juggernaut did try to advance on a much too patient Rory, and ran into a stiff jab-counter every time. I think it made Juggernaut think too much and lose confidence in what he wanted to try, hence the boring fight. I guess you could say they both overthunk and didn’t let go enough. I had the thought from the 2nd round on that Rory was going to drop a bomb and finish, or at least change the pace of the fight. Then again, GSP used this exact same tactic against Josh Koshek but had two more rounds and more active with the jabs to put a beating on Kos’ face, which didn’t happen in this fight.

    • Cptmats

Two main differences between pride and UFC, Pride was a show ! Pure entertainment purpose.
      UFC fighter are pro athletes.
This is no different than a 1-0 shut out in hockey or a no hitter in baseball. May not be the most exciting to watch but penalizing fighters for doing their job well is not the answer.

I think finish bonuses are the answer. Fighter get double pay for winning why not throw in an extra 50% for finishes !

      • Maddawgmar

I agree with the finish bonus, similar to TUF. But I don’t agree your Pride comment. Basically you are saying Pride fighters were not professionals and just clowns out for a show. I believe the “GOAT” fought in Pride. In fact both fighters that are in the GOAT discussion fought in Pride.

And as for Hockey and Baseball or Soccer match people pay knowing they are gonna see a low scoring game and get surprised if it is high scoring. And in the UFC people pay to see awesome fights and are disappointed when two fighters just dance and throw a few jabs.

        • Cptmats

“Basically you are saying Pride fighters were not professionals and just clowns out for a show.”

Thats not what i said at all !
Pride had the best roster ever, but it was completely unsanctioned.
A lot of guys who were def not contenders and wouldn’t even get a fight in the UFC got tittle shots. Pride put on a lot of fights that were for entertainment purpose only ! Bob Sapp vs Big Nog, Fedor vs Zuluzinho.
As far as hockey and other sports, No people don’t go expecting a slow game. They go expecting to see a game wheather it a shut out or blow out !
If people go to watch a ufc expecting an exciting fight than they are watching the wrong sport because not every fight is exciting.
If you wanna see a brawl you should watch some four round boxing matches or a tough man competition !
this is a profesional sport and winning is more important that making sure YOU are entertained !

      • Gary Fredericks

Brilliant idea! I see it that way too Cptmats.

  • Dragon Kid

GSP stepped in for Rory tonight, folks.

    • George Sperry

      Wow… what a stupid comment.

      • Dragon Kid

Why’s it stupid? Isn’t GSP the guy who always jabs his opponent to victory?

        • George Sperry

It’s stupid because jabbing is far from all GSP does. GSP is proficient in every phase of MMA and shows that in every fight.
Fighter styles make fights good or bad. You can’t have a good fight when one guy doesn’t have the skill to engage the other guy and Ellenberger had trouble getting on the same side of the mat with Rory, when he did he got hit min the face.
Maybe you would do something stupid when you were winning the fight and the other guy couldn’t do anything about it, but I doubt many fighters would.

          • Dragon Kid

obviously you don’t have a sense of humor & are way too sensitive.

          • christopher

Ignor him….is a FAN.. whos never trained END OF DICUSSION

          • Cptmats

            much like you ?
            Keyboard warrior !

  • DCee

Fighters gotta realize when you’re on big matches on FOX, PPV and soon FSOne, you gotta bring it, don’t bore the fans and definitely don’t let the fight go to the judges. You’ll lose respect AND opportunities for titles and money. You want the people to talk about you, bring action. The flyweights who boxed in China on HBO2 last night was more exciting than that borefest!

    • Maddawgmar

Excellent point. If I was the UFC President, neither of those two will be on a main card for their next fight. The main selling point of any mma event is the main card, the under card is just icing on the cake.

Also Dana talks about “go for the money”. I say put the best performers on the main card and offer a main card bonus. Like 10k more for earning a main card spot. That and Of The Night bonuses adds to the incentive to put forth an extra effort. Example give Herman and Smith a main card fight in their next outing. Low spot obviously but a spot none the less

      • sdelfin

Good point. What may have been a top-contender fight leaves the UFC with a contender very difficult to sell. To the UFC’s credit, they’ve been known to reward fighters who try to be exciting and sometimes lose in the process.

  • George Sperry

I have no idea what Dana, or any of you, expected Rory to do. Ellenberger had nothing and did nothing. Rory just hit him and hit him. Was Rory supposed to quit beating him up and do something different?
I just don’t get it. Both guys have to fight to make a fight and for Dana to go on and on about Macdonald is ridiculous.

    • Maddawgmar

I respect your view, but I felt Rory did not beat him up at any point. And that is the problem. I am a Marine and in combat if the enemy shows a weakness or lack of offense we would step up our aggressiveness and go for the kill. Now I know that this a fight and not a life and death situation, but it is a relevant analogy. I think the thing that pissed Dana off is Jake admitted he laid an egg, and Rory talk up his performance. It was a two way street, both fighters blew it. But only one fighter didn’t realize it, at least based on the post fight comments.

    • christopher

are you serious…. RORY BEAT HIM UP ROFL… did you watch the fight do you even train in any style of martial arts or go down to the mall and buy your tap out shirt.. Neither fighter did a damn thing….. If you think a front jab beat up him you clearly have experience in fighting what so ever… a Let me school you here george, A Jab is not a power punch its designed to set up either a combo…. did you see JAKE once the fight was done he had a few scratches plain and simple…. and DANA Had every freaking fight was borning neither fighter did a damn thing…. 3 rounds the crowed BOOOOO hell after the sold out center was bOOOOO… so seriously if you dont train or never have plain and simple you have No reason to commator who orders ppv and thinks he has a clue about fighting

      • Cptmats

Anderson Silva ko’d Griffin with a jab, GSP destroyed Kos with nothing but a jab. Great fighter can win fights with a jab alone and know better than to risk throwing anything else when you’r opponent can’t get past it.

This was a very important fight for both guys, not some back yard brawl.

        • christopher

No shyt sherlock both fighterss SUCKED tonight and they both admitted it ON here…learn to read. You think either one of them is gonna move up in the ranks….. you think anyone was impressed for 15 minutes of blah….. neither fighter is ANDER SILVER and last time i checked… ANDERSON finishes fights…. not decions do your homework before you post on here thanks !

          • pewpewdie

            you sound like a bitch

          • christopher

I sound like a bitch because i have a freaking clue what im talking about…. Go back in the garage and practice your karate, keyboard warrior :)

          • pewpewdie

no because you get mad over inconsequential information and get hostile, just like a 16 year old bitch.

          • Cptmats

            well said !

          • Cptmats

no you sound like a bitch because you have no clue what your talking about.
Rory fought a great fight ! you’re just to stupid to see that.
Go back to back yard wrestling or what ever you actually know something about !

Grow a brain before you post on here, thanks

      • George Sperry

Yeah…, I watched the fight and here is what I saw….
Rory punching, punching, punching Jake in the face while Jake flailed away swinging at AIR. I saw Rory defeat everything Ellenberger did with the exception of one TD with 1 minute left where Ellenberger did NOTHING. I saw a man get thoroughly embarrassed and now I see his fans crying the blues.
If I see a fight where one man can do whatever he wants to do and the other can’t do a damn thing I’d say he was beat up and humiliated.

        • christopher

BOTH GUYS eMBARRASSEED.. That why the entire crowed booing.. that why dana white made his comments in a nut shell saying the fight was horriable…. Why Congrats…. You wannabe g.s.p jab jab jab…. did he knock him down nope ? did he submitt him Nope.. they both sucked…… seriously.. your a focking moron whos never trained in martial arts and sure as hell has never been in a street or bar fight thats totally clear… you can be your keyboard warrior for the day but honestly do the site and forums a favor and S.T.F.U you no clue what your talking about thank you George SPERRY :)

          • Cptmats

            shut up troll !

    • Ray Lane

It reminded me of that Werdum/Overeem fight. Overeem got a lot of crap for the fight, but you are right… it takes two. I think Macdonald did what he had to. If he had “gone for the kill” he would have opened himself up to a big shot.

  • claudale

Every canadian fighter has been involved in a boring fight. Gsp didnt even finish Hardy out of fear of being punched. That also explains why he wouldn’t please fans and move up a weight. He walks around over 200 and so many other legends have gone up a weight

Canadians all try to win on scored points while playing it safe and all of them have fans who will defend them

Ellenberger would come forward and Rory would run back. How exciting

Obviously this is how gsp will try and eke out a win over hendricks. Expect him to be more boring than ever

    • George Sperry

GSP tried 2 submissions on Hardy, an arm bar and a Key lock if I remember correctly and beat him around the cage for 5 rounds.
You are grasping at straws trying to make a point that doesn’t exist.
You guys that call fighters sissy’s because they don’t play rock’em sock’em robots are not fans of MMA, you’re fans of street fighting.

      • christopher

GEORGE Last time i CHECKED whos the champ @ 170 whos walked thru the 170 class and defended his belt how many time…. Yeah more times then you can count but here look it up on sherdog.com mmaweekly.com or ufc…. Your sooo focking cluesless you deserve to just get a soiled straight to the face and wake up in emergency room for a broken jaw and broken nose.. Your sooooo focking clueless… why dont you get off your ass and go sigh up for say.. ATA TAEKWONDO Atleast then after paying for you belts you can say your a real martial artis… ROFL !!!!!!!!

        • Cptmats

what a loser you are !

    • Cptmats

      your an Idiot
Don’t talk s*** about Canadians, we are the reason you don’t speak German !

  • Basturd Juanito Idgaf

Dear God help us if this ever happens again, ill jump the octagon fence and fight both these snoozers even if its at the cost of me getting knocked out at least SOMETHING exciting happened. I refuse to watch any GSP fights anymore either, i mean whens the last time u actually seen an exciting fight from him? When? Long ass time man. How you gonna gain anybodys respect including self-respect knowing you fought like ‘Ellen’ and Rory? If you know youre a good fighter and gonna put on a fight that they might be talking about 20 yrs from now, the money will automatically come, you wont even need to worry about it, youll have so many sponsers too wanting you to represent their product you might just have to fight them off as well. Being a fighter in the fight business is extremely very easy math. Im pissed still thinking about the fight becuz i wuz pumped up probably like a lot of ppl wanting to see this fight, im like, omg rory vs. ellen? Hell yea, lets get this show on the road. *2nd round of the fight….what in the F*** is goin’ ON?!!! FIGHT YA DUMB A**HOLES!!! Youre also representing where ya from, what ya been through, can you really look at yourself in the mirror and ppls eye and do interviews knowing you did a poop ass performance like that? F*** no man. Better redeem yourself Rory and ‘Ellen’, you both are badass fighters but now everyone is looking at you guys like youre a buncha jokes becuz you are.

  • KungFuPanda

Anybody else think Dana helped create this ‘boring fight’ problem? These guys are so afraid to be cut from the roster by him after 3 or 4 losses, of course they’re going to play it safe. Name one other sport where just 3 or 4 errors will get you dropped from the team/league? I’m not saying its all his fault, but he is definitely not helping to make exciting fights with a system like that….and don’t even get me started on his fight of the night ‘bonuses’…that $ is pocket change to the UFC.

  • WHS

I understand fighters need to make a living, but fights like this make me want the Pride yellow card implemented in the UFC. It would make lay and prayers and fighters who fight not to lose accountable for their actions.

  • Milosc

    Dana White is a manipulator

It’s like he’s just shooting for the lowest common denominator when addressing an audience. Just mix together enough issues, paint them with the same self-serving brush, and exploit any situation to save face… like we’re all morons

The issue of fighter pay has [obviously] more to do with “how much money ‘he’ is making, versus how much he dishes out to the people who actually make it, for him”. It’s about class, business ethics, not necessarily ‘performance’ for some random guy here and there. Taking advantage of someone’s dream is soo 20th century, and the guy really needs to keep Don King’s name out of his mouth for awhile

Sorry, but a lot of pro athletes wouldn’t take a million dollars to let Jake Ellenberger just smash their face in, tank their standings (as if a losses are ever forgiven), and potentially de-rail their career for your beer lols some Saturday night. A dollar bill is not a whip, and it’s about time White needs to get his head right on how high-level minds work*

(Also: ‘Shifting blame to the victim’ is so common a tactic, I’d think people would start taking it as insult to their intelligence. It’s like talking about how short the girl’s skirt was the whole time, instead of all that duct tape in your trunk. The guy ‘s got paintings worth more money than the “fighter pay debate”, and needs to stop fronting weak excuses for the ‘I’d blow my boss, if it wasn’t gay’ demographic. He should be embarrassed, and the longer he drags this thing out, the worse it will get for him once people find out how much money ‘he’s’ making…)

*Fact: money, alone, does not motivate people of high caliber: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrkrvAUbU9Y

    • lowlb

      Spot on!

  • fuzznarf

Completely disagree. If either one of these guys charged in trying to ‘bring it’ and then got caught KTFO looking like a chump, Dana would have ripped them a new asshole saying that they came in unprepared, without a gameplan, and/or overhyped.

  • james j

I thought it was a good fight. Rory is the first fighter to completely make ineffective. Dana is the boss and wants flash, but Dana should not coach fighters. Rory won and should be congratulated.

  • Bugster

Rory jab wasn’t even that good, I never saw one time did Ellenberger head snap back at all. There was no double jab, no blood, no bruises. Ellenberger just didn’t come to fight.

  • Milosc

Why is it only on MMAWEEKLY that any post with a link gets buried till the 3rd day?

  • lowlb

Dana is beginning to resemble porky pig, imo…
    Check it out..
And yes fighter should go get the money at all costs because fighting does not pay well.

  • Mr Pete

UFC is an Entertainment sport, of course Dana makes these statements. Scared and boring fighters are not helping this cause. What other motivation can Dana use other than “Money”?

  • Bill white

Put jake Ellenberger on the Woman’s circuit in MMA. Let Jake the cake fight Liz Carmouche.

  • Bill white

Jake “The Cream Cake” Ellenberger has a nice ring to it?
