Dana White is ‘Warming Up’ to Women’s MMA

Posted on by Damon Martin

For years, UFC president Dana White has said that he doesn’t see a day when there could be a women’s division competing in the Octagon.

His argument has always been that the weight classes in women’s MMA simply aren’t deep enough to justify creating an entirely new division for the UFC.

White has, however, said that “super fights” are always a possibility when involving a name like Gina Carano or current Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

Last weekend, White sat as a fan and enjoyed the Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman card in San Diego, and between the main event and the bout between Miesha Tate and Julie Kedzie, the women seem to be making an impression on the UFC president.

“I don’t think I’ve been too shy about what I think about Ronda Rousey, and not only did she look impressive on Saturday night, but her numbers killed it on Showtime, too. Ronda Rousey is a star,” White said during a fan chat for Metro PCS on Tuesday.

“I don’t know how many of you have Showtime Extreme, but the fight with Miesha Tate was awesome, and I am warming up to women’s MMA.”

Now that doesn’t necessarily mean the ladies fighting in Strikeforce should pack their bags and expect to fight in the Octagon tomorrow, but it’s encouraging to hear that White is starting to possibly turn the corner on women’s fighting.

Rousey managed to lead Strikeforce to its largest TV ratings so far this year for a card airing on Showtime, and her star continues to rise as one of the most talked about athletes in all of MMA.

Now it’s just a matter of time to see if the ladies will eventually find a home in the Octagon.

If we have watch the rabitts under 155lbs weight classes i’d rather it be females. They are supposed to weigh under 155 not grown men!

    • Lesnardo

yeah, anything below 155lbs is midget fighting.

    • Ememay

You guys must be out of shape and overweight.

      • Lesnardo

        naw..i am 6′ 180lbs.

        155lbs for a guy = tiny

        • Big_Scooter

          Have you been here long?

Assuming you are fairly lean and muscular at 180 (which I am just going to give you credit for, not knowing either way), you almost certainly still carry around 10 lbs of fat you don’t need, which would be shed in preparation for a fight. Then, standard practice would be to cut water weight before the weigh-in.

If you were a pro fighter, you would be a 155 pounder. If you carry around a little bit of chub, you would be a featherweight.

    DEAR MR. MARTIN:

PLEASE TAKE A CLASS IN WRITING AT YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

“For years, UFC President Dana White has said that he doesn’t see a day when there could be a women’s division [competing] in the Octagon.” PLEASE REMOVE THE WORD COMPETE. A DIVISION DOESN’T COMPETE. THE FIGHTERS IN THE DIVISION DO.

“His argument has always been that the weight classes in women’s MMA simply aren’t deep enough to justify creating an entirely new division for the UFC.”
HORRIBLY WRITTEN GARBAGE. YOU MEAN THE TALENT POOL IS NOT DEEP ENOUGH. WEIGHT CLASSES AREN’T DEEP ENOUGH?

“Last weekend, White sat as a fan and enjoyed the Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman card in San Diego, and between the main event and the bout between Miesha Tate and Julie Kedzie, the women seem to be making an impression on the UFC President.”
DUDE. BREAK THIS DOWN TO TWO SENTENCES! YOU ARE CONVEYING TWO DISTINCT IDEAS.

““I don’t think I’ve been too shy about what I think about Ronda Rousey, and not only did she look impressive on Saturday night, but her numbers killed it on Showtime too. Ronda Rousey is a star,” White said during a chat with Metro PCS on Tuesday.”
BECAUSE YOU ARE SUCH A HORRIBLE WRITER, I CAN’T HELP BUT WONDER IF (A) WHITE HAD AN INTERVIEW WITH METRO PCS OR (B) WHITE HAD AN INTERVIEW THROUGH HIS METRO PCS PHONE.

“Now that doesn’t necessarily mean the ladies fighting in Strikeforce should pack their bags and expect to fight in the Octagon tomorrow, but it’s encouraging to hear that White is starting to possibly turn the corner on women’s fighting.”
I WOULD USE THE WORD ALTHOUGH AND GET RID OF BUT. IN THE ALTERNATIVE I WOULD JUST BREAK THIS SENTENCE INTO TWO PIECES.

“Rousey managed to lead Strikeforce to their largest ratings so far this year for a card airing on Showtime, and her star continues to rise as one of the most talked about athletes in all of MMA.”
YOU MEAN “TO ITS LARGEST RATINGS.” ALSO FOR “CARDS AIRING ON SHOWTIME.” THIS MAKES IT CLEAR THAT ROUSEY’S RECENT FIGHT WAS ON SHOWTIME AND OF THE SHOWTIME EVENTS RONDA’S WAS THE HIGHEST.

I agree the writing on this site is generally crap. I’ve seen much worse than this particular article though.

It seems to be the norm these days as the film “Idiocracy” becomes reality.

      • Lesnardo

I agree. This is by far the best I’ve seen from Damon Martin. Yet, this guy can’t write.

This article does not carry atrocious grammar/spelling errors that are present in some of Martin’s other articles.

Yet, the guy cannot juggle words. He uses phrases that he is not comfortable in using. His diction is bizarre and contrived at times. He tries to write smoothly yet his writing is just awkward.

Why? Because he is not a writer. He was never a writer. He is a glorified blogger.

Indeed! The writing on this site is more than often, embarrassingly poor, which is a sad commentary on our education system.

I come to this site to read MMA news, not learn english.
You guys are a bunch of douche bags, there are several MMA websites out there… So GTFO!!

    • lfighterc

I have to agree with Lesnardo, literature has never been my strong suite but i can still tell that most of these articles are complete garbage and that the writer is either (A) a retard, (B) not caring and giving us crap on purpose or (C) a retard

  • Lesnardo

    PS

I AM INTENTIONALLY BEING A D-BAG SO THAT THE WRITERS ON HERE STOP UNDERESTIMATING THE INTELLIGENCE OF ITS READERS.

    WE ARE NOT ALL UNEDUCATED!!!

WHEN YOU WRITE SH*T LIKE THIS, I AM VERY TEMPTED TO CONTACT ALL OF THE ADVERTISERS THAT ADVERTISE THROUGH YOUR WEBSITE AND TELL THEM THAT THEY SHOULD ADVERTISE ELSEWHERE, LIKE SHERDOG.

I AM TELLING YOU THIS BECAUSE I DO CARE ABOUT THIS WEBSITE. I’VE BEEN COMING HERE FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS. I ENJOY YOUR RANKING. I ENJOY THE NEWS. I DON’T ENJOY READING GARBAGE ARTICLES.

    • smill0313

Just to clarify, you were a d-bag LONG before posting those last two comments. Also, if you are going to correct someones grammar and punctuation, try not writing in all caps. You are an ass clown.

  • smill0313

Wow, Elite XC here we come.

  • joeshine

  • acspida#244

Agreed, I don’t come to this site to brush up on proper English. I visit the site to catch up on news. Who has time, or wants to take time to find grammar errors? Take it for what it is….a simple article to update the public what DW thought about women’s MMA after watching as a fan.

    Dana is banging Ronda.
