Dana White Confirms Lombard vs. Stann and Shogun vs. Silva

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Former Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard has his first opponent in the UFC, and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua knows his next foe as well.

UFC president Dana White on Sunday took Twitter on Sunday, fielding questions from fans, and confirmed that Lombard will make his Octagon debut against Brian Stann, while Shogun will next square off with Thiago Silva.

White refrained from saying when or where either fight would take place. It appears, however, that Lombard vs. Stann is likely for UFC on Fox 4, while Shogun vs. Silva could take place at UFC 149 in Calgary, according reports by MMAJunkie.com.

Lombard is one of the most highly anticipated UFC debutants in quite some time. The 34-year-old has long been considered one of the best middleweight outside of the Octagon, but now he’ll get the opportunity to prove just how good he is in the Octagon.

He hasn’t lost a fight in nearly six years, riding a 20-fight winning streak to a 31-2-1 overall record.

Lombard hasn’t drawn an easy first fight. Stann (12-4) has lost only to No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen since dropping to middleweight, where he currently holds a 4-1 record.

Shogun (20-6) has made a pattern of alternating wins and losses recently, and is coming into the fight with Silva on the heels of dropping a unanimous decision to Dan Henderson at UFC 139.

Silva (14-3) just returned from a one-year suspension for providing a fake sample for his drug test following a fight with Brandon Vera at UFC 125. He lost in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 2 to Alexander Gustafsson, when the two squared off in Sweden.

thiago vs shogun?? err that one don’t make alot of sense…im not interested in watching thiago fight anymore…the guy didn’t do jack shit against gusstafson…he was just a punching bag

    • collideoverme

Agreed. Not a fan at all of Thiago Silva. He should be starting at the bottom, the complete bottom, and working his way back up.

  • adice89

Both very competitive matches. Silva vs Rua thats a very very close call on who would win. Both solid. Rua needs to throw at diffrent angles to win the fight, his gas tank isnt the greatest ever either.

    • LAW OF FIST

Both very competitive matches. agreed. Rua’s gas tank isnt the greatest ever either. disagree. When he’s coming off surgery he gasses, but his tank is actually quite good, five round war with Machida he didn’t gas or the one with Hendo were he took a beating in the beginning and was still fresh in the fourth and fifth rounds. Im sure it will be a great fight but i still don’t really like this match up. I love Stann vs Lombard. F@ck it i like e’m both!!!!!

Stann’s game plan should be to take Lombard into deep waters and drown him. Hector’s gas tank is questionable.

I’d like to see the winner of this fight vs. the winner of Belcher – Palhares.

  • phrankthetank

I am not upset about either of these matches

  • brianhussey

I always look forward to two Brazilians hurting eachother! I can’t stop doubting Stann, so I have to do it one more time. I think the Golden Boy is in trouble. I’ll be rooting for him though.

    • Lesnardo

Man I was excited for a minute. I thought it was Anderson Silva vs Shogun at 205. Thiago Silva?? :(

      • adam1848

Me too! I thought, “Anderson or Wandi?!” But Thiago, that makes no sense at all. How can anyone justify giving him a shot at a top 5 guy after a lackluster performance against an unranked up and comer is beyond me. Lombard v Stann is a good match up, and although Thiago is stylistically a good match up for Shogun, he simply doesn;t deserve it.

        • Lesnardo

Probably can’t justify from the ranking perspective.

But as of late Shogun’s been getting beat down left and right. I think Thiago should be a good come-back opponent for Shogun. DW is not done with Shogun yet.

Shogun vs Silva is a good matchup. Shogun needs this win to stay in the top 10. He hasn’t looked good lately. His knees seem shot and his movement is horrible. Not sure if its the surgery or if his camp constantly changing has been hurting him.

Check out this article about Shogun http://www.ufcfightblogger.com/rumors/rumor-shogun-rua-fight-rio-brazil-ufc-147/

    • Lesnardo

Yeah, I agree. He got beat down by Jones and Hendo.

He destroyed Forrest but Forrest who????

Shogun should destroy Thiago “the wife-beater-animal-DNA” Silva.

What happen to Branden Vera? Why isn’t he fighting Thiago?

  • thumbyummy

Whatever happened to the Shogun vs Rampage rematch?

    • phrankthetank

      Rampage is having knee surgery

      • Lesnardo

Rib surgery? His ribs hurt from having nightmares?

  • MRBARBARYCOAST

Lombard by first round Ko-Stann is brave enough to go toe to toe with the cuban and it won’t end well for the American-sad to say

  • rogerdoger

Yea lombard and stann should be good. I think Hector will get the win tho. Stann’s a beast but he still inexperienced and hasn’t fought anyone besides Chael yet. Leben, Santiago and sakara were all finished by the time he got to them and if Hector lands one of those bombs…..lights go out in georgia.
