It’s still too soon for the UFC to name an opponent or even a date for Phil “CM Punk” Brooks’ first fight in the Octagon, but the former WWE heavyweight champion appears to have determined where he’s going to be training for his first fight as a mixed martial artist.
UFC president Dana White was doing the media rounds on Tuesday for Saturday’s UFC 182: Jones vs. Cormier, and while a guest on FOX Sports Live, he said that he believes Punk will become teammates with UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.
Pettis trains out of Roufusport, which he co-owns with Duke Roufus, in Milwaukee, Wis. Aside from training alongside the likes of the Pettis brothers, ONE FC champion Ben Askren, and numerous other top level fighters, Roufusport is also within striking distance of Punk’s home in Chicago. It’s roughly a 100-mile trip, one way.
The choice also comes with some baggage, as Roufus and his camp have come under scrutiny lately following the death of one of his fighters, stemming from the fighter’s kickboxing debut on a show that Roufus promoted.
As for Punk’s entry into the Octagon, White is taking a wait and see approach to nailing down a date and opponent.
“We’re just gonna see how he progresses in training and then we’ll go from there.”
