It has been a crazy week leading up to the big MMA events this weekend. But nothing has been crazier than the trials and tribulations as we head into tomorrow night’s co-promoted Strikeforce and EliteXC event “Shamrock vs. Baroni.”
Late last week, Murilo “Ninja” Rua was removed from his shot at Joey Villasenor and the vacant EliteXC Middleweight Championship. Then it came to light that Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett was in jail for violating his probation. If that weren’t enough, rumors then started surfacing that Phil Baroni’s medical status was in question.
How quickly things can change.
Rua and Baroni, yesterday, were both cleared medically by the California State Athletic Commission. Today they weighed-in and received their final clearance to fight tomorrow night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
EliteXC was actually able to secure Bennett’s release from jail this morning, but due to heavy traffic, he was unable to get to the airport in time to make his flight from Florida to California. Missing the weigh-ins, Bennett will not be allowed to fight tomorrow night, Edson Berto taking his place against Victor “Joe Boxer” Valenzuala.
