Clay Guida and Patrick Cote were both victorious in their respective fights at UFC 74 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Guida gave Pride veteran Marcus Aurelio a rough orientation to the Octagon. Cote, meanwhile, continued to shirk the UFC monkey on his back with an impressive win over The Ultimate Fighter Season 3 middleweight winner Kendall Grove.
Coming off of back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, Guida pushed the pace of all three rounds with Aurelio, landing several effective right hands and keeping the American Top Team fighter off his game.
While it seemed that Guida dominated throughout, it was a bit surprising when the judges awarded him a split instead of unanimous decision. Two judges scored it 30-27 for Guida, the third 29-28 for Aurelio.
Cote is another fighter trying to establish himself in the Octagon. After going 0-4 to start his UFC career, he has now won back-to-back bouts in the promotion over Steve Smith and at UFC 74, the aforementioned Grove.
The win over Grove was especially important to Cote’s UFC credibility as the Hawaiian fighter was starting to be touted as a future title contender. Now it is Cote’s name, especially if he continues his winning ways, that will be mentioned when contenders are bandied about.
MMAWeekly caught up with both Clay Guida and Patrick Cote following their victories at UFC 74 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Both interviews are available now for viewing In The Cage of the MMAWeekly.com Premium Members section.
