Chris Weidman UFC Champion-478x270UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is out of his scheduled UFC 173 title fight against Lyoto Machida due to injury. UFC officials made the announcement on Monday.

“Weidman suffered a knee injury that will require minor surgery and his bout with Machida has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 5. A new main event for UFC 173 on May 24 will be announced in the days to come,” read a statement released by the organization.

Weidman was originally scheduled to face Vitor Befort in the UFC 173 main event, but on Feb. 27 the Nevada State Athletic Commission banned the use of testosterone replacement therapy. Belfort, who was on TRT, backed out of the fight.

“Given the time constraints involved between now and my proposed next bout in May, I have determined not to apply for a license to fight in Nevada at this time,” stated Belfort at the time. Machida replaced Belfort.

UFC 173 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Weidman vs. Machida will now take place at UFC 175 on July 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Sucks, but at least its not pushed back too far.

Glad I decided to go in July instead of May!!

Weidman can delay the end of his reign as champion but only for so long. Machida will be champion before long!

the machida era never began, not sure it will.

I don’t think it will be Machida, but I don’t think Chris will be champ for long.

Machida will circle to the left the whole match and run from Weidman, who will attack him like a slow plodding dog. This is a bad matchup for both to include the fans.
I see MAchida winning in a boring match on points. Sux for CW.

One thing I have learned after watching this sport the past 21 years (UFC 1 on PPV baby!), is the fights that look the best on paper are sometimes the worst, and vice versa.

I can see your point about this fight potentially being very boring, as Machida is a counter puncher and so is Weidman. I guess we’ll know in July…

For better or worse its one thing you had to give anderson credit for. When I fight was announced he’d show up and fight. I don’t recall him pulling out of a fight. (He may have.)

It’s really not a knock on Chris. If you get hurt you get hurt. Few guys nowadays seem to want to go in injured. I guess we can probably thank fighter insurance.

Yup. It’s a new breed of fighters. I also blame sponsorships as well. Nobody wants to sponsor a loser.

  • Mark McDowall

I can see him making a case for it, but with everything that is being said about Vitor I think he will have to have at least 1 dominant win over a ranked opponent to sort of “clear his name”. If he comes back in his first fight off of the TRT and he looks like garbage and gets his butt handed to him…well then we have our answer on what it was all about. I think the UFC is afraid of that hence him not getting a title shot yet.
