UFC officials issued a statement to MMAWeekly.com on Friday announcing the bout’s cancellation.
“Tonight’s featherweight rematch between Charles Oliveira and Nik Lentz has been scrapped from the UFC Fight Night event after Oliveira was not cleared by doctors to compete,” read the UFC statement.
“Oliveira, who was getting over a viral infection he contracted in Brazil, had a relapse earlier this week and missed weight for the bout Thursday, coming in at 150 pounds. He did not attempt to weigh in again. (Friday) morning, the Brazilian fell ill, and after being seen by a doctor he was pulled from the bout.”
Oliveira and Lentz were supposed to have weighed in at 146 pounds or less for their featherweight bout. Having missed the mark by four pounds, Oliveira was initially penalized 20-percent of his fight purse.
UFC officials did not have any comment on whether or not the fighters would be compensated despite the cancellation or if the 20-percent penalty would still be imposed. Details of the fallout from the cancellation are likely to be addressed at the post-fight press conference following the event’s conclusion.
“The UFC Fight Night event at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Conn., will proceed as scheduled with nine bouts,” according to UFC officials.
