Chael Sonnen 042 UFC 117-478x270Following a failed out-of-competition drug test that revealed banned substances in his system, UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from professional mixed martial arts.

The fighter made the announcement on UFC Tonight during his weekly role as the FOX Sports 1 program’s co-host.

“I want to stay within the rules, and I don’t fully understand them, and I have to put my health first. I have to put my family first,” Sonnen said.

“There’s going to be a day where I no longer have the title of fighter,” he added, “but I don’t ever want there to be a day where I don’t have the ability to have the title as parent and father and husband, and my health has got to come first.”

As reported by MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday, Sonnen tested positive for anastrozole and clomiphene, both of which can be used to treat symptoms related to hypogonadism.

Sonnen was randomly tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) in May while he was in Las Vegas promoting the upcoming UFC 175 fight card. The results of the test prompted UFC officials to pull Sonnen from the card.

Following news of the results of withdrawal from the card, Sonnen defended his position in saying that these drugs were taken as a result of coming off testosterone-replacement therapy, which the fighter said he utilized to treat hypogonadism. Sonnen had a therapeutic use exemption for such a treatment prior to it being banned by the NSAC.

Sonnen said Wednesday that he is, as all athletes are, responsible for the substances put in his body.

“I do admit fault,” he said. “I want to make sure I take full responsibility.”

Sonnen completes his professional career with a record of 28-14-1.

Shud legalize the kush…just makes more problems being illegal

    • TheCerealKiller

      What’s kush?

      • namesmase

        Weed

  • truthbtold

Chael is entertaining, but he’s also a hypocrite and liar. No way, was he gonna stop the trt, juicing or whatever esle he was doing and still be able to compete.

  • Christina

I doubt he’ll stay retired. He’s probably dodging some of the bad press that was sure to continue.

  • https://www.facebook.com/bestnicknameeverbros Eugenio Croitoru

Terrible way to go out. He couldn’t come back after two positive tests. Regardless he will be one of my favorites.

    • Crawford

One of my fav’s too bro. Never a dull moment with Chael. Always tuned in to watch him brawl.

  • I’ve Lost My Smile

Figured this was coming after all he did once claim that he would die without TRT.

  • dandogood

Throw the drug addict Chael off TV also. Low life scum bag loser fake fraud. Nice role model for kids As-hole

    • https://www.facebook.com/bestnicknameeverbros Eugenio Croitoru

Wow, you’re cool. Low life scum bag loser? He never ran from a fight.

Look at you keyboard warrior go.

    • snapdad

      you’re an idiot

  • mmalive

Chael, Man you were always a great trash talker, took Anderson to very deep waters, sold fights, and decent analyst for Fox. Never a dull moment with you. Why would you go out this way? Retire AFTER being caught. You should have RETIRED before news broke. Now people will know you as a juicer and not the trash talking, ultimate fighter named Chael Sonnen.

    • deepgrim

if he had have retired before the news broke, do you not think people would wonder why given that he had been training for a big fight at the time

      • mmalive

Not really. At least it would be less evasive on Sonnen’s part.

Chael has a persona that the UFC need’s for some excitement.

His trash talking, actually hypes up fights ala Anderson.

Win or lose( more losing) Chael is a decent fighter.

Bad part is that Chael talks crap about others and is actually doing the same thing.

He should have announced RETIREMENT PRIOR to news breaking of his juicing.

He will be known for juicing than his persona as trash talking Ultimate Fighter American Gangsta from Lynn named Mr Chael Sonnen

        • deepgrim

i really dont think it would matter either way, chael haters will remember him juicing, while his fans will remember him for his fight anyone anytime and his personality. either way he will be remembered

    • TheCerealKiller

But this wasn’t “juicing”, it was the correct medical way to get off of TRT. None of the substances were steroids.

      • Cereal killer is an idiot

Dude every drug he took was to keep his test levels elevated that is a steroid. One is an estrogen blocker and keeps test from turning into estrogen so his body didnt turn into a horror movie. Yes he is and was on steroids.

  • jimmy777

    ohhhhh the drama

  • Thu Ha
  • AXE MURDERER

I TOLD U SHALE YOU WOULD NOT FIGHT ME I TOLD U SHALE YOU WOULD RUN FROM ME, U NO SHOW UP TO FIGHT SHALE! -_-

    • AXE MURDERER

      IS NORMAL

      • AXE MURDERER

        ES NORMAL

  • Usmc8408

He’s a shining example of why NOT to do steroids. 37 and nothing left in the sack, other than what the Doc puts there.

  • brad king

Anderson may want him after a few tuneup matchs, thus bringing him outta retirement.

    • mmalive

Anderson is more focused on return to title run. Than retire.

He would rather RID his mind of Chael.

  • Mark McDowall

Chael is doing now what he was always better at. He was never a great fighter…he was always a great talker…he should be a commentator…wouldn’t mind him replacing John Anik’s annoying behind.

I just think that he went out looking like a complete ass for getting all over Wand about running from a drug test while he is knowingly taking banned substances. Just makes him look really stupid accusing someone of doing something…while you’re doing that exact same thing yourself!

    • wprm

Ya but the difference is Chael has hypogonadism and needs TRT for his health.

  • DirtyBird

If any fighter on the UFC roster insulted, made racist comments and showed complete disrespect towards the american people Dana White would have fired them on the spot. On the other hand Chael did all those things to the Brazilian people and White rewarded him with main events and co-main events. I am really happy that we wont see him in the octagon again, hopefully this is a permanent decision!

    • mmalive

Sonnen is a persona that UFC needs.

      Chael will be Chael.

He hypes, sells, and sells fights.

      His antics are quite funny.

Ex. bringing a fake Interm Belt to news conference remember?

Chael actually believes the stuff he makes up in his own world.

He is a good laugh esp when he gets BEAT DOWN after all the trash talking.

      Ala Anderson and Jon.

No one should take this guy seriously.

At the end of day, Chael is an entertainer.

    • Mike mckinney

Brazilian isn’t a race just as American isn’t a race. Saying something about a nation is not being racist.
It would actually be more racist to imply that any single race is American, Brazilian, etc.

For example, what would you think about someone saying the only way to be American is to be white?
      That’s what you are doing…

      • DirtyBird

So now I’m the one racist because I implied than that Americans and Brazilians are a “race”? I would guess that you think Chael was funny? Do you also think that money laundering is a minor crime? And that Chael Sonnen is what the american dream is all about?…great values I’m impressed!

        • CasaDeVerdade

Don’t ever bother to defend yourself and expect to be attacked for your comments. These are the people that chant “USA USA USA” at events. They believe that anything that isn’t american is 3rd world and deserves to attacked and insulted.

          • Mike mckinney

It’s interesting you bring chanting USA up. No one shows up and chants like brazilions.

Also, I wouldn’t say that sonnen talking that way was right. I was just saying that talking crap about a country is different than talking about a race. Someone is racist when they believe another race is inferior to their own. That has nothing to do with where you are born, or live.

          • Austin, TX

That’s actually Brazil you were talking about. If you insert the word “Brazil” for the word “American” you would arrive closer to the truth. People in America cheer for foreign fighters. They are polite and applaud everyone based on the fight. People in Brazil boo anything thats not Brazilian and then immediately bring down the house for the native son when he is introduced. How many events have you watched? Watch some more live events like I have for the past decade and then let me know.

        • Mike mckinney

I don’t have a clue if you’re racist, nor do I know if sonnen is. I was just pointing out that speaking down about a nation is not the same thing as talking down about a race. It’s funny that in society it’s usually exceptable to hold ones own country in higher reguard, but unacceptable to hold ones race above another. They both create prejudice.

To answer your other question I at times do find sonnen funny. People take words way to seriously nowadays.

I hadn’t really thought about it before, but yes, I would most likely consider money laundering a minor crime. Money laundering alone is victimless. (The vast majority of the time)
With that said, it’s not the money laundering that’s serious, but the crime that creates the need to money launder that is serious.
However, I couldn’t really care less about sonnen settling for money laundering. I’m not much of a sonnen fan to begin with. I only judge strangers based upon the reason I know they exsist. In sonnen’s case it’s fighting, and I don’t find him exciting, or very good.

I don’t even get your American dream reference. Never in my life have looked at anyone and thought “they’re the American dream.

Btw, my previous post wasn’t meant to attack you. People just seem to throw the “racist” title around like its nothing. If people are going to throw the word around they should at least know what it means, and what it doesn’t mean.

          Novel over
