Chael SonnenThe Nevada State Athletic Commission on Thursday instituted a ban on therapeutic use exemptions for testosterone replacement therapy in the state.

The effects were felt immediately when Vitor Belfort withdrew from his next fight, which was slated for Las Vegas. Belfort had been scheduled to challenge Chris Weidman for his UFC middleweight championship at UFC 173 on May 24, but after citing the NSAC’s shift in policy, Belfort did an about face.

“As other jurisdictions may follow suit, I am going to drop my TRT program and compete in MMA without it,” Belfort told Fox Sports on Thursday. “Given the time constraints involved between now and my proposed next bout in May, I have determined not to apply for a license to fight in Nevada at this time.”

The UFC moved swiftly and granted the title shot to Lyoto Machida, who gladly accepted.

Chael Sonnen, who is a co-host of Fox Sports’ UFC Tonight weekly magazine show, weighed in on Fox Sports Live on Thursday after the announcement was made, calling the new fight between Weidman and Machida a de facto superfight.

“This is an incredible fight. Chris Weidman is the undefeated, undisputed middleweight champion of the world, taking out the all-time pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva,” said Sonnen.

“Lyoto Machida has never looked better since he’s come down to 185 pounds. He’s undefeated with a knockout over Mark Munoz, a unanimous decision over Gegard Mousasi, and he’s a former light heavyweight world champion.

“When you talk about superfights, you talk about a champion from one weight class taking on another champion from another weight class. You want a superfight? On May 24, you’re getting one.”

Sonnen was in promotion mode, but as an athlete that has competed under the assistance of testosterone replacement therapy, Fox Sports hit him up for his thoughts on the NSAC ban on TUEs for the practice.

Sonnen didn’t seem fazed.

“The rules are the rules,” he declared. “Yesterday, it was legal; so quit complaining. Today, it’s illegal; so quit complaining. Testosterone is out.”

Well Chael I guess you’ll have to stop talking about that time u almost beat Anderson then.

  • Wolf Ticket

I also remember Sonnen saying he does not feel to be cheating by taking something he needs to stay alive (not these exact words). I wonder if this means his career is over, or he just pulled “Tito” that time.

Too bad for Chael. Without roids he will no longer be able to Chael Sonnen anyone anymore!

  • green giant

I think its completely legit vitor is not taking the fight. Your body needs to adjust for more then a few months after stopping therapy.

the word “superfight” gets thrown around too loosly…jose aldo vs anthony pettis would have been a superfight…chris weidman vs lyoto machida is NOT a superfight. it’s a very interesting fight but machida had the title YEARS ago, what’s super about that fight? was jon jones vs vitor belfort a superfight because vitor once had the title too, you know…see, it sounds ridiculous…

vitor was a light heavyweight champ not a middle weight chamo

Plus, Weidman has got one title defense so far so while it may be a super fight, it’s not a Superfight.

I am sorry but your logic not makes sense. Weidman and Machida are a current champion who won twice from the best p4p fighter ever and Machida has won from all the greats and is an ex champion of a higher weight class where he never really belonged. Pettis never defended his title and got the title from Ben who is not even close in the p4p rankings ever. Not get me wrong I am also super stoked about the possible Pettis Aldo fight but they are both super fights or both not. No disrespect!

    • TwoFirstNames

Get outta here, Pettis hasn’t even defended his title

  • Manuel Lopez

Didn’t Sonnen say he could die without TRT?

    • MuayThaiFood

Yes, and he’s got a track record of not following rules so I don’t think this is such a bold statement here.

Pure test is out.. Now that the testing is reduced, bring on the anabolics! :p

Weidman vs Machida is probably the biggest super fight so far. I can’t think of a more exciting fight to date. Both are amazing at what they do and it should make for a killer fight. Pettis is hurt so often I don’t even think about him. He also and hasn’t even defended the belt.
