Chael Sonnen: “I Don’t Think Vitor Belfort is Better Now; He’s Just Got a Different Haircut”

UFC-on-Fox-2-workouts-Chael-Sonnen-001There haven’t been many fighters that have been contenders in two divisions. It’s even more rare to be a contender in two divisions at the same time, but that’s what Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort have been for most of their storied careers.

The two will rematch on Nov. 9 in the main event of UFC Fight Night 32 in Goiania, Brazil. They first met at Pride 32 in 2006 with Henderson winning a clear-cut unanimous decision. UFC contender and Fox Sports analyst Chael Sonnen believes only one has improved since that Pride event in Las Vegas seven years ago.

“I think Vitor has always been good. And I just got done training with Dan Henderson and the last time I worked out with Dan Henderson is before the first time he fought Vitor. And he whipped Vitor. He dominated him. They went out and fought hard, but Dan dominated that fight,” said Sonnen during a recent question and answer session in Manchester, England.

“I can tell you Dan is better now than he was then. I don’t think Vitor is better. I think Vitor was very good back then, but I don’t think he’s better now. I think he’s just got a different haircut,” he added.

Sonnen faces former light heavyweight titleholder Rashad Evans at UFC 167 on Nov. 16. He’ll then coach The Ultimate Fighter Brazil opposite Wanderlei Silva and the two will fight at the conclusion of the show. After that, he has his sights set on Belfort.

“I’ve been trying to fight Vitor for a long time now. And I think Vitor is awesome. I think Vitor is probably the second scariest guy in the UFC right now, right under Jon Jones,” said Sonnen. “But I think he’s beatable. I think I can beat him. And I really don’t care either way. I’m going to go punch him in the face repeatedly.”

sounds like he is being completely honest to me but i think vitor has improved, you dont go around head kicking people after going thru his entire career without these types of ko’s without improving. that being said i dont think vitor would be able to finish chael inside the first round and if he doesnt the fight is chaels to lose, thats if they ever fought.

  • Frankie Francis

vitors a bum chael would smash him

    • Ian Price

Vitor is not a bum, but yeah, I agree, Chael would take him down faster than a hat at church.

I’ll take Chael in that fight. Vitor is scary but Chael can whether the storm. I might get heat for this but I wouldn’t mind Vitor and Phil Baroni at MW. Even just for 1 hard round.

    • Milosc

      (“Phil Baroni”… hm)

Well, I can’t wait to find out

      • fsunoles10

baroni actually has some hands, if he brought it that would be an exciting fight but if that fight happened personally i think baroni would be a bit spooked by vitor so i think vitor would absolutely run thru him as the old cliche says like a hot knife thru butter.

        • Brandon Kohn

I saw Baroni gas against some chump in the Ring of Fire (colorado) less than a year ago. the guy gasses 2 minutes in. Great anticipation- no delivery

    • Kris-tyahn

This was right after he beat Nate Marquardt, which got him the 1st fight vs. Anderson. Sonnen said he’d never want to fight Marquardt ever again & that Marquardt was the toughest fight/man he’s ever fought!

    • Ian Price

      Never saw that interview, thanks!

  • Milosc

I personally think Chael’s mind-control sounds ridiculous past the ‘people who [especially] like being white’ demographic (but that’s just my opinion..)

It’s funny, but Vitor actually looks like a wrecking machine next to that guy when you watch their latest common fight side-by-side… I think Chael’s just ‘diggin deep’ again 😉

But you know.. what else is he going to do? Making it as ridiculous as possible is exactly what makes the fight ‘work-out-either-way’, right? Even if he gets annihilated, just “lose like a champ”, again; like he [subconsciously] secretly meant it, to be a showman, or some fleeting, convenient, WWF iconography just so he doesn’t come off as a complete whacko

The man lives his role like a condom, and for this character actor/athlete, every moment is ALL about the Benjamins. He’s taking a shot

    • Kris-tyahn

Milosc: The reason Belfort can now “kick”/KO his opponents with kicks to the head is b/c of all that TRT he’s been using the last 3 or 4 fights. Take the TRT away & you get the same old Belfort! I thought I read Belfort wasn’t taking TRT for this fight, but seeing how it’s in Brazil, I’m sure he will be, therefore I see Henderson losing b/c of Belforts TRT use.

      • fsunoles10

im a huge sonnen fan so if you were even remotely close to being right i may agree with you based on my bias but like i said you dont go around head kicking people when you havent head kicked anyone in your career without practice and improvement, especially when you take into consideration that sick ko he had on rockhold. trt doesnt help accuracy and accuracy is exactly how he ko’ed rockhold.

        • Ian Price

Yeah that’s right. Hell, almost anyone can do a head kick KO. Don’t need TRT for that!

“Just stand still Vitor, and don’t move for 2 seconds” –Chael

          • deepgrim

spinning heel kick is tough enough to perfect tho

      • Milosc

        Wait a minute… isn’t Chael on TRT?

How much would you say it helped his comeback, and if you ‘take away’ from Vitor, shouldn’t you really take Chael’s, as well?

Can anyone take away TRT from either?

(You didn’t mention that.. but I suppose it would at least make for a level playing field)

      • Lucas Freire

I guess we can all blame Chael’s TRT treatment for losing his fights.
Also, isn’t Dan Henderson on TRT too? And I don’t think he recently started doing backflips or spinning kicks. It’s really easy to throw someone else’s accomplishment on TRT. What about all those fighters who were on TRT and were on losing streaks/worst performances of their carrers?
I think TRT revamps some old guys, but nothing makes someone evolve more than training.

      • Hunt969

Hendo vs Belfort is TRT vs TRT. So what’s your problem?

  • Alex Adams

I think Vitor is probably the second scariest guy in the UFC right now, right under Jon Jones

WHAT! The scarriest guy in the UFC is and will be for a couple of years Cain Velasquez! After the beating and bloodbath he gave to Dos Santos ans Big Foot…

    • Mike mckinney

People may have a tough time beating Cain, but that’s not the same thing as being “scary.” Jds would be someone more to fear than Cain. I would agree that jones would be in the same group as Cain. Thiago silva would be a scarier guy to fight than jones.
A perfect example would be Gsp. No ones afraid to fight that guy. Everyone calls him out. Then they lose. Anderson had guys moving weight divisions to avoid fighting him.
You can be very good without being scary. Cain likes to cuddle up against the cage. No need to fear that. 😉

      • Lucas Freire

Yeah, and also likes to demolish faces. You really mean to tell me Cain isn’t scary? lol
The 240 pounder that is physically unable to smile, whose face is naturally mean and who gave the biggest beatdown, TWICE, of JdS’s life?
Thiago Silva is a barbie next do Cain.

      • King_DG

Thiago Silva looks scary, but definitely not a scarier guy to fight than Jones. Thiago Silva would gas out after the first round and won’t be as scary anymore. He gassed out against Hamill!

        • Mike mckinney

I think you guys are confusing tough to beat with scary. Palharres is one of the scariest guys. No one wants to fight that guy.
Cain is a grinder. Overeem is a scarier guy. Hunt is a scarier guy. I don’t think either of those guys are close to Cain. But they have knock you into next week power. Those guys might leave you feeding through a straw.
Everyone is wanting to fight jones and Cain. No one is afraid of them.

  • Kbroesq

Am I alone in thinking they should switch the fights to Sonnen v. Belfort and Henderson v. Evans? All four guys can fight at either LHW or MW, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

I just want to see Sonnen v. Belfort SO badly.

  • TheCerealKiller

Does he ever fight outside of Brazil?!?!?!?!
