Chael Sonnen Fails Random UFC 175 Drug Test

Chael SonnenWhile nearly everyone has been focused on Wanderlei Silva’s purported “running from drug testing” and Vitor Belfort’s June 17 hearing before the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to try and get licensed, all eyes are now shifting to Chael Sonnen, who has tested positive for two banned substances.

The positive results stem from a random drug test that Sonnen took when he was in Las Vegas on May 23 for a UFC 175 promotional press conference. MMAWeekly.com independently confirmed the breaking news following an initial report from ESPN.

The two substances that Sonnen tested positive for are Anastrozole and Clomifene, which can both be used to treat symptoms related to hypogonadism, a condition for which Sonnen used to utilize a testosterone replacement therapy regimen.

Exemptions for TRT usage in combat sports athletes, however, was banned by the NSAC in February.

The positive drug test result is likely to place Sonnen on suspension and puts him out of his intended July 5 bout against Vitor Belfort, which seems ironic after he heavily criticized his original opponent, Wanderlei Silva, for supposedly running away from random drug testing.

“Wanderlei has operated his entire career under the shadow of suspicion that he was using performance-enhancing drugs. However, he has never failed a drug test, so we don’t speculate on those types of things,” Sonnen said on UFC Tonight recently. “That clean record came to a screeching halt. Not only did he fail his test, he refused to take the test. And as you know, a refusal is equal in the eyes of the commission to a failure.

“He ran from the test … and I don’t mean that figuratively; I mean they came to his gym and he literally ran.”

Sonnen is now forced to shift his focus away from Silva and delve deep into his own future. Even if the substances he tested positive for were to treat his hypogonadism, they are banned substances and he’s not likely to find any easy path out of this situation.

In fact, in referencing Sonnen’s own comments when TRT was initially banned, he may have no other choice but to stop fighting.

“I’ve had to stop testosterone with the hope that we can find a new way to gain results of upping testosterone and staying at a healthy level,” Sonnen said on UFC Tonight when the ban was handed down. “If it doesn’t work, I may have to stop the sport and it’s as simple as that.”

Anastrozole and Clomifene are both substances that aid in Sonnen’s treatment for hypogonadism. But even if they only serve to counter his hypogonadism and help his body to put his testosterone level in a normal range, the substances are banned in combat sports, and are thus illegal for him to utilize.

“What we do know is testosterone is out,” Sonnen said. “You can’t use it any more. We’re not talking about illegal substances here. We’re talking about perfectly legal things, but that doesn’t mean you can do it in sport.

“You have a license to fight. A person in this country can consume alcohol if they’re over 21 years of age. That doesn’t mean they can drive a car. And if they do those two things, they will have their license pulled because it’s a privileged license.

“If this retires guys then it retires guys. The rules are the rules.”

UFC officials told MMAWeekly.com, “Chael will address the situation at 3 p.m. PT on Fox Sports 1.”

Hahahaha….what an idiot. He talks all this garbage about Wand…then pops for 2 banned substances. This officially proves he is the dumbest person in the history of the fight game.

    • b-soc

I don’t think anyone can argue with your comment. it is just bad timing making a situation way worse.

  • bajafox

Time to retire and be an analyst full time. That seems to be his calling anyway. Wandy should retire also.

Wonder who will replace him or if they’ll just scrap it altogether?

    • XIRand0mHeroIX

I’m sure they are going to scrap it. Can’t imagine Nevada is going to be giving Vitor a license next Tuesday anyway.

      • bajafox

I bet they will scrap it too, what’s the point of having 2 back up fighters for an original fight that never materialized?

  • sanjuro

Sonnen failed a drug test? I though he was clean, like Ryan Braun and Lance Armstrong.

    • GWalcott

      You mad bro?

Sarcasm is now equated with anger?

  • TKDGuy

This is why I agree with the ban on TRT. If your body can’t keep up with the training regimen, because of age or any other reason, then it’s time to retire. It’s a young man’s game. Such is life.

    • Rhino_Rocks

the problem with that is ufc invests promoting all these old guys and hardly shows the future fighters. shit 75% of main cards have past users

    • Steve Jakobs

does that also mean if you a guy requires a major knee operation, that wasn’t available a few years ago, he should retire? Maybe that injury is saying, “gee, maybe you should retire” Sorry, it doesn’t work like that.

      • MuayThaiFood

If you think that knee surgery is performance enhancing then I think you should blow out a knee and see how much better it is after the surgery as compared to pre_injury.

Clomidiphene is a drug that is a reuptake inhibitor of testosterone. It is given to men as a way to restore natural levels. When you receive testosterone it causes the testes to quit making it naturally. Endocrinologist often give clomidiphene as the first step in trying to restore test function in men. It is also used to increase sperm count in men who are trying to have children. I was given this drug for this reason and it allowed me to have a child. There are basically two ways doctors restore testosterone clomid or test therapy. Anastrazole is an anti estrogen drug used in men to reduce high levels if estrogen and restore hormone invalance. I also take this drug.

  • Matte

    Ohh man this fight ^^.

As it is now they could just let the three amigos, Wanderlei, Sonnen and Belfort just duke it out. Should be pretty much on even terms.

And Ic, stop making excuses please. Pretty much all banned substances CAN be used for some actual medical reasons.

  • Corey Hutton

Sonnen, the biggest hypocrite in MMA, next to Dana.

  • mmalive

Sonnen, What the HELL? You criticize Vitor, Wandy. Now you been CAUGHT yourself!!! Come on man. I like your selling of fights, taking Anderson to deep waters, commentary, etc… But man you FAILED BIG TIME!!!

    • lololhahahhaa

Exactly man that is what i’m saying. People seem to forget.. i read about vitor is all over the place, saying this guy a cheater.. sonnen get caught more than 3 times and hes still “cool” mma fans are stupid and fickle as hell sometimes. This guy sonnen is by far the worst.

  • Steve Jakobs

Before people start coming down on sonnen for these drugs, maybe you should investigate what they actually are. Anastrozole is something I take. It’s an aromatase inhibitor. Meaning, it inhibits the changing of testosterone into estrogen. When someone stops taking trt, their bodies will be flooded with estrogen, these drugs meerly try and mitigate that. Neither are steroids.

    • mmalive

Regardless, what Sonnen did is A JOKE,

He criticizes Vitor, Wandy and DOES THE SAME thing.

      Sonnen took illegal/banned substances PERIOD.

Sonnen is a hypocrite. Trying to make himself out clean. But in reality, full of BS!!!

The bottom line is DO NOT SHOOT of your mouth and then DO THE SAME THING.

  • macarrech

    oops lol!

We’ll see how long this lasts. They hardly ever retire!

Stress dramatically lowers your Natural Testosterone levels…..There’s nothing more stressful than fighting in a cage/ring for a living….No matter how tough of a Man you are everyone gets stressed/afraid in combat sports…..Not to mention the grueling training which can lower your T levels aswell.

Most MMA/Boxers fighters likely have higher than normal natural T levels at first (when they first go into fighting), but after a long stressful career most likely have reduced or even lower than normal T levels….And the day to day stress of boxing and mma is a huge negative toll on ones hormones…..

I know a lot of guys who had long military careers who have had Testosterone problems as well….They serve for 5-10 years and then have extremely low Testosterone levels after they are discharged…..Once again it’s the day to day stress of combat that kill it…..

  • cwc4life

tested positive after the first silva fight…beat down in the second. Don’t put either of those fights in the highlight category of his lackluster career
