Chael Sonnen Blasts Wanderlei Silva, Says He Ran from Drug Test Ahead of UFC 175

Chael Sonnen vs Wanderlei SilvaChael Sonnen is no longer fighting Wanderlei Silva at UFC 175, but that hasn’t stopped the “American Gangster” from throwing verbal punches at his Brazilian nemesis.

Sonnen appeared on UFC Tonight on Wednesday and blasted Silva for eluding Nevada State Athletic Commission officials when the fighter was approached for a drug test last weekend in Las Vegas. Additionally, Sonnen indicated that he foresees the commission revoking Silva’s license to fight for what Sonnen described as a failed drug test.

“Wanderlei has operated his entire career under the shadow of suspicion that he was using performance-enhancing drugs. However, he has never failed a drug test, so we don’t speculate on those types of things,” Sonnen said on the FOX Sports 1 program. “That clean record came to a screeching halt on Saturday night. Not only did he fail his test, he refused to take the test. And as you know, a refusal is equal in the eyes of the commission to a failure.

“He ran from the test … and I don’t mean that figuratively; I mean they came to his gym and he literally ran. He goes out of sight where they come after him, saying his name. I have not spoke to the athletic commission in Nevada, so here I am, going to speculate that they will revoke his license and perhaps his career with the UFC will be done.”

Attempts to reach Silva for comment went unanswered at the time of this publication.

A report earlier on Wednesday said that Silva failed to submit an application for a license to fight, while his UFC 175 replacement, Vitor Belfort, was able to submit one.

Belfort is considered the No. 1 UFC middleweight contender. As a result of the match-up with him, Sonnen said the Belfort bout will determine the next in line for a shot at the 185-pound title.

“I am now fighting a No. 1 contenders match,” he said. “The winner of my bout will take on the winner of Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida.”

UFC 175 is scheduled to take place on July 5 in Las Vegas, and is headlined by the Weidman-Machida title fight.

  • Baller31

Wanderlei is a has been. Sonnen just went from an easy win to an ass whoopin’

    • Piotr

Sonnen wishes he was the “has been” that Wand is.

      • Rick Ricky

Wand ducked the fight and tarnished his rep. Backed out, gave up, ran!

        • Alex’sMom

          This is sadly true.

        • Alex’sMom

Rick Ricky, assume for the sake of the argument that Wandy didn’t run away.

          He loses to Chael.

Wouldn’t you and other TUF noobs still come here and bash Wandy?

I doubt an average UFC fan would come here to pay respect to Wandy should he lose.

          • Baller31

He would get respect, even after losing, if he had shown a little class during the whole buildup to the fight

          • Alex’sMom

But he didn’t. So he wouldn’t get respected.

Trust me..MMA noobs will come up with any reason to bash him should be lose the fight.

      • $84275998

Agreed. Chael should have padded his record with a bunch of unknown, smaller Japanese fighters like Wand did.

        • Alex’sMom

Umm.. Saku, Rampage and Arona are not exactly cans. One was arguably #1 at the time, the other destroyed Chuck and the third was a beast.

Yes, Wandy had some easy Japanese opponents that would be fighting at 170 now.

None of them were unknown though. Maybe to TUF noobs but not to hardcore fans that watched Pancrase.

    • Mark McDowall

How many titles has Sonnen held in major promotions??? A big fat 0….Wand was a BEAST in the Pride days. He should have hung them up a while ago…but the fact that something comes out of Sonnens mouth kinda proves it’s probably bull.

      • Crimsonfang

It’s easy to be successful against inferior competition. The fighters of the pride day can’t hold a candle to what fighters have evolved into today. The new generation is being trained in MMA as if it were a single martial art.

        • Mark McDowall

Agreed…but it was a different sport then. It’s the old Ali vs Tyson argument. It was a different far more brutal style back then. Granted the current day MMA fighters are alot better trained…but you can’t take away from the skills of guys like Wand, Shogun, etc back in Pride.

        • Dragon Kid

We’ll today’s generation of fighters are also more athletic as well compared to the fighters from previous generations.

        • Alex’sMom

          “fighters have evolved into today”
Dude, you can’t compare old Pride with new UFC and say Pride had inferior competition.

Old Pride vs Old UFC is probably a better comparison.

Chael definitely got better towards the latter part of his career, thanks to TRT.

Not sure that I would consider Chael as a new UFC fighter.

Chris Weidman, JDS, Cain Valesquez, Jon Jones…etc..are the new breed.

Both Chael and Wandy are old breeds.

      • fsunoles10

well sonnen technically should have been the wec champ when he beat filho but thats neither here nor there. but lets be honest here if you big wandy fans have no doubt in your mind that he was clean than you’re fooling yourselves.

        • Mark McDowall

Oh I’m sure that Wandy has used PED’s before. But…he’s not been caught like Sonnen was.

          • $84275998

Because they didn’t test in PRIDE.

Are you thick or just acting dumb?

          • Mark McDowall

Well considering that PRIDE was run behind the scenes by the Yakuza…chances are they weren’t exactly as strict with the testing as they should have been.

      • $84275998

        Wand was never a beast.

He was 1-3 in his first UFC run and went on a spree of beating undersized, unknown Japanese fighters in Japan.
Look at his record in the UFC since

Chael said months ago Wand wouldn’t show up for the fight and he was right.

Wand is all talk, no walk.

        • Rubixx

Undersized??????? Hunt….. Cro cop…. Iron head.. You sir are a misinformed Sonnen nut hugger. Wand fought in the open weight grand Prix with the chance to fight super heavies. Wand has accomplished more than Chael ever will. Get a clue. Why give sonnen a contender fight when he failed to beat Silva twice already? He should stay next to Glazer in the booth where he belongs, criminal.

          • Baller31

Wanderlei got destroyed by Belfort and beat by Ortiz, so he went to pride. Yes he did well there, for a while. Regardless, sonnen was the worst possible matchup for him and would’ve easily beaten him

          • Rubixx

Sonnen can’t beat his way out of a paper bag. Even if he dominates for 4.9 rounds he can’t win a championship. He was popped for PEDS and he was most likely on roids, that’s why he needed TRT. Talk about the pot calling the kettle a f—ing retarded criminal. He’s a talking head in it for the money. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does everything he’s told by Dana. “Let Vitor wheel kick you in the first 10 seconds.” Oh god lets hope so.

          • deepgrim

because he has beat plenty of top middleweights and silva is no longer the champion so that is irrelivant

        • Mark McDowall

So Sonnen being 1-3 in his last 4 fights, all in the first or second round may I add, doesn’t matter??

And Sonnen walks the walk huh…

Like the time he said he was going to beat Silva…and lost.

Then there was the time after he lost to Silva he was walking around with a belt and it had to be taken away from him because he lost the title fight.

Or the time he said he was going to beat Silva in their second fight…and got his head taken off in the second round.

Oh what about the time he said he was going to beat Jones…and got rag dolled for the better part of a round before getting pounded out..

          Yep…Sonnen definitely walks the walk…

          • deepgrim

chael said in plenty of interviews that he didnt know if he could beat jones. Sonnen got beat by anderson, jones and evans. 3 of the best fighters in the history of the ufc. can wanderlei say the same of his defeats

          • futuretech

Sonnen lost to a former MW Champion Anderson, current LHW champ Jones and former LHW champ in the last 5 years.

Wand couldn’t make it 1 round with Chris Leben.

He aslo talked a lot of shit heading into the Sonnen fight and pulled out last minute like a coward.

I would say Chael is the one who walks the walk fat boy.

  • Piotr

Sonnen and his mouth are a joke. Why was he on TRT again? Oh that’s right, steroid abuse.

    • Maddawgmar

Where is there proof of steroid use? You claim holds absolutely no water and sounds as completely idiotic as Chael saying Wanderlei cheated and didn’t fail a test. Chael only ever popped for TRT never steroids.

      • Wolf Ticket

Testosterone is an anabolic steroid. By this time, after so many articles, every MMA fan could know this…

        • jay

Wand is the one who ran from the drug test, Chael took his.

Looks like Wand was the juicer we all knew he was from his Pride days all along.

        • Maddawgmar

Yes it is considered an anabolic steroid, but it was a legal use. His insinuation was the Chael was on major steroid which caused his condition (hypogonadism) which can be caused by steroid use, but can also be caused by other natural causes. There is no proof that Chael used anything other than TRT. As there is no proof that Wanderlei used because he didn’t piss hot. Only speculation.

Would you classify a low level steroid used, let’s say in the treatment of AIDS, on the same level of Stanozolol? Well I wouldn’t classify TRT nearly on the same level as a major steroid.

          • Will

I believe Cheal was using TRT illegally, thats why he got suspended and fined.

          • Maddawgmar

Chael over used TRT during his Silva fight yes. But has had exemptions to use multiple times. My point is and has been, that Chael has no grounds to call out Wandy for steroid use without proof, as no one can call Chael out for anything other that a one time TRT abuse.

      • Raphael Mastro

Where the proof of.. … … Not?.. .. .. yea not steroid use lol

    • Rick Ricky

Another graduate of the slip and fall school.
      Effing idiot!

  • deepgrim

absolutely devasted that fight is gone, been looking forward to it for months, funny chael had been saying since the fight was anounced that wanderlei would find a way out of it. still a great replacement fight, but not the same heat between the 2

    • Alex’sMom

      heat?

Dude, it saddened me that Wandy (once a champion) has to snoop down to this level against Chael (never a champion).

Wandy should have backed away a long time ago.

Let Vitor or Lyoto destroy Chael.

  • DamianCross

Why would Wand be subject to a random drug test if he hadn’t applied for a license yet?

    • Alex’sMom

      This is all bs.

    • Mike mckinney

Nsac does “out of competition” test on some fighters that are thought to be soon applying for a license. If you fail, or refuse the test you can’t be suspended, but the commission can refuse to accept an application for whatever time it wishes. (Pretty much the exact same thing as a suspension.”
The UFC seems to honor these everywhere, but other commissions don’t have to, and usually don’t. . It is viewed a bit differently, and I also don’t think the fighter can be fined. I believe the same thing just happened somewhat recently. I think it may have been overeem, but that might be wrong.

  • The milkman

I love wand but he this whole situation looks horrible I can’t come up with a logical excuse to defend him. It sucks that one of my favorite fighters looks to be made into a coward and a cheater and he can only blame himself

    • Alex’sMom

      You can’t defend him.

Look, had he taken the fight and lost, the same TUF noobs that are bashing on Wandy would come here and bash Wandy. In fact, they would bash him harder.

So Wandy had two options. Wandy could have taken the fight, lose, and take the harsh beating from the fans, or run away and take the less harsh beating from the fans.

      • Alex’sdaddy

Maybe the stupidest thing I’ve ever read

        • Alex’sMom

          My prediction of Wanderlei’s excuse!!

“I DIDN’T RUN AWAY BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID OF CHAEL. I DIDN’T RUN AWAY BECAUSE I WAS JUICING. I WOULD NEVER DO THAT! I “WALKED” AWAY BECAUSE MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED ME SOMETHING THE OTHER DAY FOR MY BACK WHICH MIGHT TRIGGER TESTING POSITIVE. YES! SO MANY CHEMICALS GO IN DRUGS THESE DAYS THAT YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL TURN UP. THAT IS WHY I WALKED AWAY! I WANT TO GO TALK TO A DOCTOR, GET THE DRUG OUT OF MY SYSTEM, AND THEN RE-TEST! AND THEN I AM GOING TO KILL CHAEL SONNEN.”

  • Suck It

I dare to say that most MMA fans are retards.

    • taylor2008

      And you being king retard.

    • Suck It

      LOL, what an idiot.

  • Alex’sMom

Alright you noobs, I will break it down for you.

    “Smaller, unknown Japanese fighters”
Yes, Wandy fought smaller Japanese fighters who should have fought at 185 back then (and now at 170). But Wandy beat Sakuraba, and Saku was not an unknown Japanese fighter. The dude beat Rampage, Vitor and Randleman. You can make excuses. Rampage was not in his prime, Vitor had psychological issues and Saku was the worst match up against Randleman. But the fact of the matter is, Saku was arguably the #1 fighter at LHW at that time. It was Saku in Pride and Tito in the UFC.

Wandy also beat Rampage and Arona (yeah, you noobs wouldn’t know Arona). And Rampage beat Liddell. So I am not sure if you can say that Wandy wouldn’t have cracked top 3 had he been in the UFC. In fact, it would have been Wandy vs Chuck for the #1 spot had Wandy been in the UFC.

    “Wandy is afraid of Chael”
I got to say yes, at this point. I knew Wandy wasn’t gonna show up. There is too much at risk. Chael never held a title at a major organization. Wandy is a legend. I don’t want to see Wandy get a beating like Ken Shamrock. Ken should have never fought Tito.

    “Wandy was never good”
This is not true. He was good. I would say his downfall started with the second Cro Cop fight. He got destroyed pretty badly by Cro Cop who was also at the peak of his prime.

If you think about it all of the UFC fighters from Pride vs UFC days are not even in the UFC anymore. Chuck/Randy/Tito/Sylvia/Arlovski (coming back to the UFC but shouldn’t last long) have left the UFC. Wandy is still sticking it in there.

    “Vitor vs Chael”
I like this better than Wandy vs Chael. Vitor is still doing good enough to not let Brazilians down. If Wandy goes down, the Brazilians will be sad. Shogun’s loss to Chael make me very sad.

    So in sum:
    A. Back in the days, Wandy would have destroyed Chael.
    B. Now, Chael would manhandle Wandy
    C. Prime Wandy vs Prime Chael would be a close fight.
    D. Wandy’s legacy is greater than Chael’s legacy.
    E. Wandy is scared of Chael. Not about the beating but about losing and letting the whole country down.
    F. Vitor vs Chael is a much better fight.

    • Intelligent Hoodlum

      Good info breakdown.

    • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

No Saku was never #1 LHW. He beat the Gracies but thats wear it ended

      • Alex’sMom

        that’s where it ended.

Dude, there were other guys that Saku beat that would have been a contender in the UFC.

    • VALE TUDO

um…..vitor never lost to wanderlei ever, and wanderlei is my favorite. surprised no one caught you on that

      • Alex’sMom

        you are dumb.

        I said Saku beat Vitor!

        • Baller31

Hmmm… I guess everyone is confused by your moronic writing

    • Baller31

Wow, you’re the newb!!!!! Vitor destroyed wanderlei in just a few seconds! Ktfo! Ortiz also beat wanderlei, and last time they fought, rampage ko’d him as well-as did freaking leben

      • Alex’sMom

Umm…I saw all those fights live.

Dude..Vitor and Wandy were 18 and 19, respectively, when they fought. And it ended in a flash KO.

        Saku beat Vitor. Not Wandy.

You either just want to show that you are a hardcore MMA fan or have a serious reading comprehension problem.

        • Baller31

You saw them live?? Sure, everyone believes that

        • Baller31

And you have a serious issue with writing anything remotely comprehensible

  • james j

I bet it was hilarious watching Wandy run. Like a turkey on the day before thanksgiving.

    • Rubixx

I’d like to see you run if he was chasing you.

  • David Huenecke

No talking bad about wand or giving sonnen praise. But it has come out that a lot of fighters in pride were paid to lose fights. So imo you cant really base someones rep/legacy on their fights in pride. Because now that its come out we dont know if a fighter in pride couldve won a fight but wanted a payout vs a fighter actually losing a fight.

  • Denny Swain

Chael step down and let rockhold step up for you

  • kiss44

I think Silva has finally showed us what a moron he really is. Having said that, Sonnen should not be fighting for a chance at the belt. He has not earned a title shot, even if he beats Belfort. The UFC did the right thing by replacing Silva with Belfort, but not as a No. 1 contenders match.

    • Lawdog1521

If they did the right thing by putting Belfort in there, and Sonnen did beat him, why wouldn’t he get a shot? Since when do you have to beat the #1 contender and someone else?
