One of the top featherweight prospects in the sport is no longer a free agent as Team Alpha Male fighter, Chad Mendes, has signed a multi-fight deal with the WEC, adding the California based fighter to a rich 145lb division.

The signing was first reported by Sherdog.com, and confirmed independently by MMAWeekly.com with sources indicating Mendes signed a 6-fight deal with the promotion.

Mendes, who trains with former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber, was actually courted by Faber to attend UC Davis for wrestling, but instead opted to head to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

He may not have influenced his college wrestling decision, but Faber was quick to work with Mendes when he made his decision to move into the world of MMA. Mendes has been working with Faber ever since and the results are undeniable.

Since making his debut, Mendes has gone 5-0 as a professional fighter, with 3 stoppages, and his most recent win coming by dominant decision over veteran fighter, Mike Joy, in early October.

There has been no timeline for Mendes’ WEC debut, but signs would seem to point to a January fight which would put him on the show set for the organization’s return to Sacramento, where he and Faber train, and where the former champion will return to action to face Rafael Assuncao as well.

Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com for more information on Mendes’ WEC debut as it becomes available.
