Chad MendesNow that the UFC on Fox 9 main event has been put in place, its time for the rest of the fight card to start filling out.

Following Monday night’s announcement that UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis will square off with Josh Thomson in the headliner, has confirmed that Chad Mendes and Nik Lentz have verbally agreed to meet on the Sacramento, Calif., fight card as well. The UFC later added its own confirmation of the bout.

Lentz was originally expected to face Steven Siler at UFC Fight for the Troops 3 in November, but reportedly jumped at the opportunity to fight Mendes.

Mendes joins Team Alpha Male teammate Urijah Faber on the card. Faber is expected to meet Michael McDonald in the night’s co-main event. Faber and Mendes will have the home field advantage for this one, as their team is based in Sacramento.

Mendes (15-1) has been knocking on the door of a return title shot against featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Mendes lost to Aldo when they met at UFC 142 early last year, but he immediately returned to his winning ways following that fight. He has reeled off four consecutive victories, knocking out Cody McKenzie, Yaotzin Meza, Darren Elkins, and Clay Guida.

It’s a crowded division, however, so instead of waiting around, Mendes will take on one of the other top contenders in the 145-pound class.

Lentz (24-5-2, 1 no contest) has been on a streak of his own since dropping down to the featherweight division. He has defeated Eiji Mitsuoka, Diego Nunes, and Hacran Dias in succession.

Adding a victory over Mendes to his string of victories would be a key step on Lentz’s road to a title shot.

UFC on Fox 9: Pettis vs. Thomson takes place on Dec. 14 at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

Badass, 145 is deep as fuakc…

  • shakejunt

man, nobody wants to fight mendes. i don’t blame them, but what better way to earn your shot at aldo than to beat mendes?

    • GiinoStenLund

      Mendes is a beast.
I think this is a missmatch..

      I would prefer Mendes-Swanson/Lamas….

Mendes is the guy to beat in 145

      • shakejunt

agreed on all points. this is gonna look like the elkins fight. grinder gets smeared early.

YOU MEAN mendes WONT FIGHT ANYBODY?? THIS GUY IS THE BISPING OF THE FEATHERWEIGHTS..ALDO SAID IT HIMSELF THAT mendes HASN’T BEAT ANYBODY GOOD SINCE ALDO DESTROYED HIM IN THE IST ROUND..LOL…LENZ IS GOOD BUT mendes WONT GO NEAR ANY OF THE SCARY GUYS LIKE THE ZOMBIE OR YAHYA OR SIVER OR EDGAR OR POIRIER??? mendes is just a guy who wants easy fights and is trying to be a 2nd string Fabor with tons of sponsors….and sponsors dont like fighters who lose??? mendes is just another bisping and he wont get another title shot fighting guys out of the top 10….SIMPLE AS THAT!!!!

    • Lucas Freire

He already fought and won against Yahya, Swanson and Koch.
His only loss is to Aldo, he isn’t the Bisping of the featherweights, he is the Belfort of the featherweights, only the champion can beat him.

      • Ian Price

        Agreed 100%

      • Kbroesq

Not to mention he just KO’d Guida, something no other fighter has done.

        • Lucas Freire

Not only KO’d Guida, but dominated Guida the whole match. I mean, for sure he didn’t destroyed Guida throughout the rounds, but he kept the fight under control for as long as he wanted.

    • shakejunt

seems like it’s the other way around, nobody wants to fight him.

    • Danny Meas

What are you talking about? He’s been calling out lamas his last 3 fights and still no reply back.. Mendes is cold as f*** back up bra

  • solo

Finally someone whos gonna kick Lentz ‘s butt!

  • Kbroesq

Come on! Why are they not doing Mendez v. Lamas for a title eliminator. It’s one of the most obvious fights there is. Lentz is good, but there are other better options right now.
