Chad Griggs

Former Strikeforce standout Chad Griggs will make his Octagon debut at UFC 145 in March against undefeated Travis Browne in Montreal. UFC officials on Saturday announced that the promotion had verbal agreements from both parties. reported Griggs’ signing with the UFC earlier this week, but now he has the first opponent in the Octagon.

Griggs (11-1) originally came to Strikeforce as an opponent for highly touted prospect Bobby Lashley. Most expected that he was brought in as a sacrificial lamb for Lashley. He turned out to be anything but, taking out Lashley after two rounds, then returning with finishes of both Gian Villante and Valentijn Overeem.

He’s got no easy draw in his Octagon debut against Browne, however. The Hawaiian has been on his own impressive streak, having never lost a fight in 13 starts. He is 3-0-1 in the UFC, his only stumble a draw with Cheick Kongo. He enters the bout with Griggs coming off of a win over Rob Broughton at UFC 135 in Denver.

Griggs and Browne will meet at UFC 145 on March 24 in Montreal.

  • That’s a good match-up. Should be fireworks.

This is the exact reason why Strikeforce’s heavyweight division needed to come to an end. Great move, now the UFC’s heavyweight division is very promising.

    My choice match-ups:

    Daniel Cormier vs Pat Barry

    Josh Barnett vs Frank Mir

Fabricio Werdum vs Shane Del Rosarrio

Sergie vs Kongo or Roy Nelson

Comier would walk through Barry, I honestly think JDS is about the only real fight for him in the UFC. He will be top three HW in the world soon if not #1. He has hands like JDS along with prob. the best wrestling in MMA !

Cormier is waaay too small for Junior Dos Santos. I don’t see Daniel fighting at Heavyweight either, once he joins the UFC.

His boy, Cain Velasquez fights in that division 🙂

I see him making the drop. At 205, he’s VERY promising!

Pat & Daniel are the smaller heavyweights in the division, it only make’s sense to drop to 205. I like that match, only because both of them have good stand-up.

Cptmats, we’re you saying that you believe JDS Is the only UFC heavyweight that could give Cormier a challenge? I’m not sure if that’s what you meant.

  • MikeMc1983

No one has said anything about the match-up I was thinking for Cormier so I’ll bring it up. I think a fun match-up would be
    Cormier vs. Carwin
    I also would like
    Werdum vs. Mir
    Bigfoot vs. Gonzaga
    Barnett vs. Cain
I would really like to see the first two, the others are just ones I think would be cool, and make a little sense.

Cormier isn’t going to drop to LHW. It just isn’t happening. He defeated a man outweighing him but 40 lbs when he fought Bigfoot Silva. He won’t have any problems staying at HWY and competing.
