Carlos Condit at WEC 35

Carlos Condit was hoping to face B.J. Penn at UFC 132. He’ll get at least half of his wish granted as the former WEC champion will face Dong Hyun Kim in a welterweight bout on the July 2 card.

UFC officials made the announcement about the new fight on Friday.

Condit (26-5) has been out of action since late last year when he flattened former title contender Dan Hardy by knockout. The New Mexico resident was set to return in February but a knee injury forced him out of his scheduled fight against Chris Lytle on the UFC 127 card.

Condit was rumored to return during the summer, and when Jon Fitch fell out of UFC 132 with an injury, he immediately offered to take the spot in the fight against B.J. Penn. Unfortunately, Penn fell off the card as well with an injury and so Condit will now face undefeated Korean fighter Dong Hyun Kim instead.

Kim (14-0-1) faces Condit in July with an unblemished record in the Octagon, most recently defeating Nate Diaz by unanimous decision in January.

The Korean Judoka has also defeated the likes of Amir Sadollah, T.J. Grant and Matt Brown during his time with the UFC. The fight against Condit will definitely be his biggest test to date.

The bout between Condit and Kim will likely gain a slot on the main card of the UFC 132 show headlined by bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz defending his belt against Urijah Faber.
