The state of California has finally approved the use of a ring in mixed martial arts competition, according to Sherdog.com. Prior to this approval, all MMA bouts overseen by the California State Athletic Commission were required to take place in a caged enclosure like the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Octagon.

The inclusion of the ring as a legal enclosure for MMA comes just in time for the International Fight League, which is due to kick off their first full 11-event season this Friday night in Oakland, California.
